Awesome day out there today! We hit the "Q" and started fishing at 7:45 am this morning. Air was a moderate 65 degrees and a bit humid. A cold front came through early this morning, which was suppose to make the day less humid. Well, if you call rain as being less humid....then yeah, I guess it was! LOL! For the first hour or so of fishing we were sprinkled on by rain almost continuously (which was not forecast!). But by about 9 am, the rain stopped and the sun proceeded to take over. The water temp was consistent at 80 degrees. Breezes were light and persisted until about 10:30 when it became hotter and with less of a cooling breeze. This is what the day started out like:
Doesn't show it, but it was sprinkling at this time as well. We marked fish throughout the main basin area and side pulled jigs between 17 - 23 feet of water all morning long. Here are a couple of screen shots showing bait & fish which we trolled over almost contantly:
The bite was certainly "on" today. When we pulled off after 4 1/2 hrs. of fishing we had caught & released - are you ready for this - 120 fish! Yep....that's a bit over 27/hr.! Talk about FUN! Four were bluegill, one yellow perch (wait until you see this beaut!) and 3 white perch. We did not keep track of ALL the lost fish either, but there were many.
Gotta admit, from the tally sheet that Walt keeps, I did have the "hot" rod....but Walt certainly got the better quality fish today. Regardless, we had a blast! Not sure what kicked 'em into high gear, but as the old saying goes, you don't look a gift horse in the mouth! This is the best we've done on the Quabbin in a couple of seasons, so it was quite memorable. Here are some of the fish we landed and released today:
And here is Walt's yellow perch:
Most fish were taken on straight tails dressed on 1/16 & 1/8 oz. ball heads. Walt did well with the Sliders too, but the predominant color pattern (for me) was "electric chicken". The sky cleared around 11:00 am and when we pulled off, this is what the water conditions looked like:
All in all a great day to be on the water and an exceptional success rate as well. Hope our luck continues!![]()
