The crappie bite is finally improving up-river on Canyon Lake, again. When the water temperature falls below the mid 50’s, the crappie are holding in the middle of the channel close to the bottom. Once the water warms, the fish are moving into the trees and suspending about 6’-8’ on the edges of the channel. Tight-lining produces best when deep then change to slip bobbers when they move up. Minnow, jigs with minnows, and just jigs are all working.
The quality, for Canyon, is very good. Very few undersize crappie are being caught with several from 12” to 13 Ό” each day. Egg development is good and with some freshwater finally making it to the lake, I expect a very good fishing season.
