    Default Conroe Report 6-3-2015

Now that the heavy rains have subsided, I am spending as much time as I can fishing the lakes that are not as flooded now. Conroe is the best in the area with an abundance of bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. When I go out I am not targeting any specific fish until I get to the water and see what is biting well for the day. Most of the time you can catch catfish, bass, and crappie on minnows anywhere on the lake. You can catch bluegill, cats and an occasional bass on worms and some nice bass and crappie on jigs tipped with minnows.
Nice day to fish. Weather was great. Hardly any wind made it easier to get on top of bream beds and hold there while catching a bunch.
This day I was fortunate to find many bream beds scattered throughout the lake usually in 10 foot or less of water. The bream like to bed in sandy bottom areas usually close to a drop off or bank. If you have a sonar you can look for 1 foot round saucer shaped indention's in the sand. There are normally a few in one area so it is easy to pick a few off each bed. I posted a pic of the beds to see.
Once I found the spots I dropped a worm on a drop shot rig with the weight at the bottom and a long shank #8 bait hook. The long shank makes it easier to remove the hook after landing the fish. I basically "bottom bounce" the weight along the outside edges of the bed (this way you do not sppok the entire bed when you get a bite). I do a little "jigging" of the worm to entice a bite. It is a very small jig to feel the weight bouncing but it is enough to move the worm to entice the bite. I even slow trolled (.1 mph) through the beds doing the jigging and it produced more bites through the beds.
I managed to catch over 50 nice size keepers all over 8". I did not catch many small dinks as the smaller ones are closer to shore or structure. The big ones hang out deeper usually so I concentrate on the deeper bream.
Came home and cooked up some and boy were they good!!
It is so much fun finding bluegills. Once you locate them it is so easy to catch a bunch and be satisfied. No wonder kids enjoy catching these sought after fish!
