Canyon Lake 3/4/15
Due to poor weather conditions, my clients from yesterday and today canceled, so I went out by myself. Despite the thick fog and surface water temperature that was 9 degrees colder, the fishing was still good.
Trying the Matzuo Kinchou Minnow for the first time, I selected the Stiletto color of the 4’ to 12’ series (SMDS-9). It took about an hour to locate white, hybrid and striped bass but the search was worth the effort. I have no idea how many I caught but there were times when I caught fish on 7 or 8 consecutive casts. I worked it more like a jerk bait with short cranks followed by a slight jerk and then a longer pause. The color, size and action was just perfect and they could not resist. After just getting tired of catching and releasing, I switch my attention to crappie.
My goal was to test different offering to see which was most effective. Testing involved setting 6 poles (spider style) at different depths, using different color Malibu and soft plastic jigs with Matzuo #2 sickle hooks tipped with minnows, Berkley Gulp Nibbles, spray scent and just naked. Findings for yesterday was green colored Malibu and soft plastic tipped with Berkley Gulp fished about 2’ off the bottom in the deepest water in the area (21’ – 25’) down the middle of the creek channel moving at 0.3 to 0.5 mph was the most productive. The crappie (all whites) were very sluggish and extremely soft biting but most were nice quality, only 1 undersize.
The fog finally lifted just before the next artic front hit.
Inside again!
