txfshrmn, I attempted to drive my boat to waco and have the throttle worked on and well, that's another post. I left about five minutes after I arrived. When I got home and got out of the XJ, I was smelling smoke from underneath. I noticed about a half quart of tranny fluid on the ground so I really began to worry. I took it to a shop on sunday and they gave me an estimate for around 900 bucks. Most of which is labor. Here is what they stated was wrong.
Trans Cooler Lines 96.10 and 84.50, Labor 97.50 Total=278.10
Trans Ft Pump Seal- 21.10 parts, Labor 357.50 Total=378.60
Trans Pan Gasket- 14.70 parts, Labor 97.80 Total= 112.20
Oil Pressure Switch- parts 23.50 Labor 65.00 Total= 88.50
I drove it today with no leak and I am thinking I may have overheated it. But, I still have a problem, why did it overheat, I bought this thing solely for pulling my boat.
Its a 98 XJ. Thanks if you can help.
Is this just another ploy to keep you from setting the "most-trash-fish- caught-in-a-season-while-losing-the-most-lures" record?
tranny problems suck. I had the clutch replaced on my truck last Sept. the parts were about 200 of the 800 bucks.
texfisher your jeep most likely has an aisin warner trans if so the most common problem is high speed driving or hwy speeds with a load the trans will spit fluid from the front seal because the drain back hole is too small to keep up.The cooler lines also are too close to the suspension in the front and sometimes will rub into if you have been driving it with no problems its probably the first one of these things as there are alot of hills btween waco &nolanville however there is a chance that you did overheat it but it is slim the price you got for repairs is about par for any of the larger shops in this area but i could do an entire rebuild for $1200 so i know we can get it done at alot better price if it is all necessary ill pm you my cell # if you want to see what we can do.

Smedley, don't forget, I still hold the record for lost rods also! LOL, dang it.
I dont understand the 97 bucks fpr the trans pan gasket, They have pulled the tranny to do the front seal nothing to replaceing pan gasket with tranny out. Do you have a transmission cooler, If not add one. If you bought it for a tow vehicle it should have had a trans. cooler as part of the tow package.Quote:
