Hay firegunny198 thats a cool looking rig!!! I'm fixing to build a design sorta like that. I live on a cattle farm so I do alot of tinkering with stuff.
You go John...no jokes here. Great job working with what you have!!!!
Grizzly jigs has some spider rigging equipment that isn't that high at all. Actually most of the non-name brands ones are pretty cheap in cost, that is. I made several and took ideas from looking at the pictures of the ones I'm speaking about.
All I learned was : to make them as sturdy as you possibly can. Cause by the time a 12+ foot rod is hanging out there ,it don't take very little wave action to make them jump like crazy. Which ain't what you want ,at all
Also , just as a co Concern. Think about how you gotta enter the boat. Especially over the bow. And the way to stow Nd deploy your trolling motor. I made mine so that they are basically a flat plate with a hole punched thru it, that attaches under my seat post. And on the front end. Closest to the bow, I put a pipe upright. That I place a tee in there. With a set screw. , Wing nut actually. That I can pull the tee outta the pipe and lay it in the floor or loosen the set screw and turn the tee out of the way. That I can raise the trolling motor. Or exit the boat.
The strip of metal plate I used was only about 4 inches wide ,that lays on the floor with the post hole thru it. I glued some rubber gasket material to it. So it wouldn't scratch off my rhino lining on my front deck. And by tightening the seat post I have locked that part down ,pretty well. Or I can let off of it and swing the whole set up ,over to one side . For whatever reason may occur. And don't have to take up all my rods.
I tack welded the nuts to the top of the tee. Which is steel tubing anyway. And I use the rod holders from Walmart. Forget the name brand. But they have a Wing nut on them. That allows me to tighten the rod holder down once I get the rods out and want to adjust them a little.
I wish I had pictures ,at this time. But it was cheap to make. But I had most the material already. Other than the rubber coated rod holders. So that was about all I was out off pocket on. So probably have around $40 in each 4 rod tee and bottom plate.
One suggestion. Make sure that you have more weight at the bottom of your system. If fixed in this manner. I didn't factor In the weight of four rods being in mine. So at times I have them bobbing up and down ,when a. Boat passes or wind catches me. Wrong. But I can lay my hand across the tee part and steady them usually. But seems I happen to be around some hangy stuff when my baits are bobbing up and around. Causing a good hang up.
I didn't want to have to step over a solid piece all the way across front of my boat. I am old and disabiled So think about it. And factor in the weight of your rods. ,how high to make them. With holder attached. So that the ends of your rod should be about as high As your knee. Or that is what seems to be the proper hieght for me.
Do a mock up with PVC or whatever you decide. Before drilling holes In your boat or welding up your material. I fished for. Year with my first attempted spider rig tee. But it gave me a lot better insight as to what I needed for the next boat that I rigged up. I just didn't want to have to fight anything. Sure you don't either. I like to be able to reel up my lines and travel without having to disassemble everything. So with what I explained on my rig. I can twist my tee around so that my rods are inside the boat with me. Saves a lot of. Time when you stop at your next spot.
Now of course there are ,many, many more folks with a lot more experience than me on here. But you will have no trouble. Just do like someone mentioned and draw it out and mock it up. In whatever way you got to.
Main thing is ease of use with the sturdiness to hold your rods with moving to wildly.
But as most will tell you, the first one or two anyone ever built. I guarantee they wish they had done it different In some way or for a particular occasion that you'll face on the lake.
But I was like you. I didn't want to pay that much for the name brand ones. But had I not been a fabricator for a living. I might have too ?
PM me if anything I said helps you. And if you need it. I'd try to get some pictures of my set up. I use two tees coming off two seat post. And have four on each. But I only fish 6 rods alone. But I cover 30 foot swipe with my set up. My boat is over 8 foot wide across the top rail. So I can't reach anymore than that. Alone.
Oh yeah. I fish with my rods out the front of the boat. Never anywhere else. But I can mover my set up with the seat post deals. To the back deck if I wanted. Or swing them to one side. But I have 3 post holes across the front deck and one on the back deck. So just depends. I wanted to have the option to do different things. Although I keep with the program. Of 12 foot rods pointing out the front. I even went remote control on my trolling motor , so that I wouldn't have to fight the foot controller around my tees
So many ways to do it. Plus I didn't want to have anything to trip me up. In case I decided to bass fish one day or a day crappie ain't doing it for me. I wanted to have a. Clean flat front deck to stand. Cause I have a bad leg and any little piece of plate or another seat mount in the floor ,could or would stub my toe or I'd be off center dodging it all the time. A uneven deck causes me a lot of lower back pain. So a lot to consider before you start. But I'm sure everyone on here will be more than helpful. I used this site to learn all I know about it. And it's not their fault that I'm no n
Better than I am. But wasn't cause the information wasn't available. Just hoped ,yay mistakes might help you To kinda pay some of these guys back for all the advice they gave me in the beginning Pass it forward type deal.
So if you made it this far. Bless your heart ,first off. But if I can help anymore ,or apologize for wasting your time with this rant. Feel free to P.M me and be happy to take pix for you. Once the kids show me. How to do that. Lol
Good luck and God bless.
Go to the hardware store and get a 1/2 flange, and accompanying nipples...then get creative.
They are cheap and work great.
That 12 pole rig with them recliners in it would put me to sleep. Those armrests would be the death of me, cold beer in the left hand and a cold beer in the right hand. Just sayin. But on a serious note whatever works, works. No matter hom much you spend.
Like your style! could you please give detailed info on the materials used to build it. Thank you, Amaziing1
