    Default Shellcrackers 5/04/2018

Dr Phil and I started out this morning with White bass on our minds. They were a bust. Crappie was on our minds. Again a bust. So, a last minute check of shellcracker beds gave us a modest catch of some nice Red-eared Sunfish aka Shellcrackers. Grin.

Phil only had a limited amount of time to spend on the water this morning, so it was a brief trip. But we landed a couple of big shellies and about 5 others that were medium sized. Big enough that they made a good dinner for Wanda and me. We saw another boat in the area and they were sitting on the major part of the area and landing some good shellies as well. We didn't get too close to them. I don't like to move in on someone else's spot, but we got close enough to talk to them. They were friendly. I was a little bit surprised that the shellcrackers were in there when you consider the phase of the moon right now. Waning with about 60% visibility.

The next 3-4 weeks will find me in pursuit of panfish. Red-breast Sunfish in particular. I have missed the past two years of fishing for them because I was in a crappie club fishing tournaments. No more of that for me. I enjoyed the fellowship and fun of a tournament, but when I fished those things, I let other types of fishing go and I miss that. So, the sunnies had better look out. I use artificial plastics when fishing for these little fish with the big attitudes. Grin. Bobby Garland has a new product out called Itty Bitty Slab Slayers and I bought some in 4 different colors and can't wait to try them out on the crackers and sunnies. I may fish for spotted bass just a little bit as well. June will find my on off shore structure looking for crappie.
