Default Chickamauga Crappie in the afternoon 10/30/2017

My wife had an early dental appointment this morning, so that meant no fishing tailwaters for Rockfish or Walleyes. But, I did manage to get out after lunch for about 3 hours or so for some crappie fishing. I have been below the dams for 2-3 weeks and haven't been fishing for my favorite fish to catch, which is the crappie.

I went alone so that I could do some scouting and move whenever I wanted to and fish however I wanted to. Grin. I like to take people, don't get me wrong, but sometimes, it is just so nice to fish all by myself. I did okay for not really knowing what the fish were doing after a couple of weeks.

I managed 8 keepers off two different brushpiles in 14-17 feet of water. I also landed a couple of short crappie that needed to grow up. I am having a crappie dinner tonight and I gave fish to my daughter for a fish fry for her family as well.

I decided to fish Bass Assassin lures exclusively. I like those lures a lot, but Bobby Garland lures are very hard to beat just about anywhere. I fished the Pro Tiny 2" shads and the 1 1/2" Panfish assassins as well. Lure colors that I caught fish on today were Limetreuse Glow, Crystal Shad, and Chicken on a Chain. I suppose that the Chicken on a Chain produced more, but it was the last one that I tied on and just left it on instead of trying others. My two biggest fish (13") fell victim to the 1 1/2" Crystal Shad fished on a 1/24 oz jig head and a new Pro Tech color that I bought and used today. I don't know the name of the color, but it is mostly dark brown with blue speckles in it. The fish seemed to like it.

I was fishing off shore, but not in the main river channel with all the current that was running this afternoon. I knew where the brushpiles were that I fished as I had found them a year or so ago. I scouted other areas and fished some docks without a bite. Actually the bite was very strange today. I had to dead stick the lure to get them to bite and many times the fish hit like a bluegill does. I thought it was bluegills biting the lures until I finally caught a couple of crappie that were just nibbling and not really anxious to feed. The fish are in good shape.

Sailfish and I had similar results. Wasn't that current something! Tuff bite in tuff conditions. Saw a lot of 6 inch fish today. Always good down the road.

Nice to get back on those crappies

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there is no one out to get you
