As it is the last day before Blount County schools start, my wife wanted me to take the day off and take the kids to the lake. How can I argue with that? Unfortunately, no one wanted to get up with me at 5:30 this morning for some fishing, so it was just me on the water. I did take the kids back to the lake after lunch for some kneeboarding.
This morning, the sunrise was beautiful. Very few were on the lake. I was inspired by Pantastic's post from a few days ago and decided to pull some cranks. This summer, when I have had time to fish, I've tried to learn dock shooting, so this weekend was my first for the cranks. I ended up with 7 on the cranks. Before I left, I decided to hit a dock or two. When moving from one dock to another, I came across a small school on the fish finder, so I casted behind the boat and landed a small crappie. Despite repeated casts, I didn't get another. On the way in this morning, I noticed two docks with lights that stayed on all night. I remembered reading here from last year someone saying they had the best luck with such docks. These docks had hundreds if not thousands of minnows visible to the eye, but I didn't get anything to bite. Guess I still have some learning to do.
On Saturday morning, my dad went with me to pull some cranks. We spent some time scouting before pulling and only caught 5 crappie. We did get three nice-sized largemouth bass. The way they bent the pole, I initially thought we were hung. Dad surprised me by going this time of year. He normally only likes to go on 70f days in summer after I shown some success with the boards. Anyone else got a fishing partner like that?
