I've found my crappie around piers and blown down trees. From 7-12 ft of water but had my bobber set at 4-6 ft if I remember right. I've caught some small ones in the deeper water in brush piles that I've set out and found with my depth finder.
As far as a depth finder goes, I have a lowrance elite 5 on the front of my boat and I love it. I know it's old technology but it works great and I can identify what's below me and to a small degree, what's around me. I have a Garmin Echomap 93sv on my console and the picture is really good on side scan straight out of the box, but I'm not really liking the 2d sonar. I'm so used to actual arches representing fish and I don't see that on my Garmin.
