    Default Chickamauga Lake report: 9/02/2016

I fished with a new friend today from the Knoxville area, Cory Gerlach, and we had a good time riding around the mid-lake area fishing for crappie. I met Cory at the ETCC crappie fishing seminar at BPS in Kodak last Saturday. I noticed that Cory took a lot of notes while we were all teaching and doing the round table discussions. Cory is from up north, way up north near the Canadian border and wanted to gain more knowledge about crappie fishing. It was my joy to ride him around and show him the mid-lake area.

We met at HBSP at 7:00 AM this morning and I already knew that we were going to be in for some rough riding on the lake. The weather report this AM gave us 10 mph winds at 5:00 AM and increasing as the day went along. We saw whitecaps in various areas. We found lots of fish on the graph. Many were on off shore structure and grouped up pretty tightly and basically had lockjaw. We did manage to eke out 10 keepers between 10-11" and a few shorts. Cory even landed a monster spotted bass that was every bit 8" long. Grin.

The main goal was to help Cory with the location of the Canine for Crappies benefit tournament coming up on the 18th of September. He is going to fish it with another friend. Cory had only been on Chickamauga lake one time before today. I hope that I didn't get him turned around too much. Grin. The fish that we caught were deep, around 15 feet or more.

Panfish Assassins in the Chicken on a Chain was productive along with a Blue Ghost BG shad. Cory changed colors quite often and I don't know for sure what all he was using for lures. I did offer a Chicken on a Chain to him, but he wanted to experiment with different colors. I like to do that from time to time. We scouted a lot of areas and did find some fish in sheltered spots and caught a few fish from them.

We finished off the morning with a very good lunch at the Dockside Cafe at Harrison Bay State Park. The hand pulled pork plate was very good. It made for a good breakfast. Thank you, Cory, for driving down and spending a 1/2 day with the old Drumking. Let's do this again sometime. I will take you up on the offer of a guided trip on Ft Loudoun lake.

That is what I like to do is take new people that want to learn about lake Murray in SC. I had the opportunity a couple weeks ago to take a fellow from Minnesota that just moved down here and really enjoyed the lake the ride and showing him places where crappie are caught. I will be glad when it cools down some. Thanks for sharing

    Good deal, DK!
    Sounds like an interesting trip

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there is no one out to get you

DK has taken more people fishing out that I know or ever heard of. This gentlemen takes them to places and shows them how to read a graph, ledges, cuts, triangles, contours, creek channel filling, blow downs, docks, tells you anything and everything he knows...Never stops teaching and sharing, and NOT ONCE have i ever heard him tell me that is has made him loose spots or not be able to find fish. He has taught me more about fishing, and mostly about how important it is to share your knowledge, because that pushes you to find new techniques, places, and broaden your horizons. Yes, I'm biased, but thats ok, because every now an then its nice to have someone take you to their secret spot first! You are the best DK! And I'm a better angler and person having known you!

Candi, I tell everybody that you are the best crappie student that I have ever had. You are a quick study and learned the system very quickly and really are better at the catching part than I am in many instances as you very well know. How many times have you spanked me on the water? Lots of times and not only did you learn how to crappie fish, but I have now ruined you with the Striped Bass fishing. You will never be the same. Grin. Thanks for asking me those short years ago to take you fishing and show you how to catch crappie with a jig. You are better at deep water fishing than most.
