Dr Phillip Gawthrop and I only had 3 hours to fish this morning because of other appointments and it was windier than heck. NE winds that at one point were slightly whitecapping the lake in the off shore place that we were fishing. We fished over an American Fish tree that we had put out in late winter and it appears that this is a spawning site for white crappie and black crappie as well. After we located the tree and saw that there were a few fish on it, we positioned out boat upwind and put down the trolling motor and set the spot lock and the Minn Kota Terrova held us in place just beautifully. In conditions as these, the spot lock feature on this TM is worth the investment. It is when there is little wind or current that the motor seems to wander a bit from the set point and can be a little aggravating.
Anyway, back to the fishing report. Right off the bat, I caught a 14.5" white crappie and Dr Phil doubled with a largemouth bass off the tree. We caught a few more keepers and a channel catfish before we left that spot and went to check out a couple of deep brush piles that held fish the day before. We caught our fish on Panfish Assassins and Dappers in the 2-2.5" size and in bluegrass color on 1/16 oz jigs. Also, Crappie Dawg lures in a color that was black on top and blue on bottom on orange and yellow jig heads. I don't know the name of this lure, but I had better find out because I only have about 1/2 bag left of this color and yesterday, it was the only color that we could get the fish to bite. I posted a video of a couple of the fish on FB if anyone is interested in looking at it. I will post still pics on this site.
