Dr Phillip Gawthrop had something come up at the last minute this AM and had to cancel his trip with me. Too late to contact anyone else, so, with the wife out with our daughter for a girl's day out, I decided to go it alone. Launched my boat from Tyner Lane ramp and then made a 25 minute run upriver to the fish that we located yesterday. We must have made the fish mad at us for sore mouthing them yesterday because I could only manage one keeper and 3 short fish today.
So, I changed gears and went to one of my favorite delta structures and found some fish sitting beneath a big stump on a drop from 12-30 feet of water. I got my boat in position for the I-Pilot to hold in the slight breeze that we had and made my first cast. Hooked a really good Crappie and got it to the boat, and DK, when will you ever learn? I tried to lift it over the side with just the rod/reel and it flipped off and back to the stump it sped. At least that is what I'm assuming.
I fished there for well over 30 minutes and for the next little while, all I could catch were the trashy green fish. Two smaller spotted bass and then a good spotted bass and finally a Largemouth bass of about 3.5 to 4 lbs. I didn't weigh the bass. Then I put on a sample lure that Betty Rutledge of Crappietown.com gave me and first cast, caught a nice keeper crappie. As fate would have it, I hung it on the stump and lost the only one of that color that I had. The fish turned off, so I proceeded to a dock that I have been catching crappie on deep and scanned the dock. Yes, they were still there. I caught 4 keepers on the first 5 casts, then they shut up for a while.
The owner of that dock, a friend of mine, came down bearing a big glass of lemonade with ice in it and it was in the middle of the day with sun beating down and so I got to chat with her for a little while. I did catch another nice keeper while we were talking. After she went back to her house, I decided that I had enough experience for the day and was thinking of going to my favorite Mexican restaurant for lunch. After a quick shower and icing down the fish that I kept today, it was off for lunch. Great day of solitude. I love these days. But, I'm not too good at taking selfies.![]()
