    Default hooks for striper

someone earlier posted a topic about whats the best hook to use for striper fishing. i cant find the thread but ill make this one up....been testing here the last few weeks 3 different style hooks and there aint no 2nd place....hands down the Gamakatsu Octopus hooks 3/0 have done better than the other types combined. keep in mind im using shiners and not shad. with shad id say downsize to a 2/0 or maby a 1/0.

Those are the hooks that I use when I'm striper fishing too, but I just change hook size according to bait size. When the fish want little 3" shad in the dead of winter, I use #2 or #1 hooks and I use up to a 2/0 hook. If I'm pulling big gizzard shad, then I use a treble sometimes. I also when pulling real frisky baits like big herring and threadfin, will go in the nouth and out the top of the nostrils to cut down on the hooks turning back when you do a horizontal nose hook. From what I've seen Gamakatsus are the lightest wire that is still strong which is important for good hookups. And that is my .02!

eagle claw also makes an octopus of which i tried and dint like. i tried a box and the snell was bent too far down the shank and when id tighten the snell up, the line would be cut on the end of the hook where the line eye was crimped around. it might have been a defective box that got by quality control.

have you guys tried the gamakatsu shiner hooks these hooks almost always hook the fish in the corner of the mouth like a circle hook, but you can still set the hook like with a j-hook(octopuss)
