Outboard Decision

I am looking at buying a new outboard and torn on what the best pick is. I am looking for a 40hp tiller steer unit. I am leaning towards a tohatsu currently but i do not know enough about any of them to really justify one over another. Yamaha is probably out of the budget and the front runners are Tohatsu, Evinrude, or Suzuki. Anybody have an opinion/suggestion?

I have 2 tohatsus..great motors. like them a lot. never given me any problems.

personally I would base my descission on what brand has the closest dealer and reviews from the dealer. compare prices, they are all pretty close.

If I remember correctly, up to 40-50hp, Mercury's are rebadged tohatsu's.
Two years ago I called local dealers about a new 25hp. One is a Mercury dealer, he asked me if I cared about who's sticker is on it. I said no. He said get the tohatsu, and save some money. Said you can take any part you want off one, put it on the other.
Around here, if you see a Suzuki for sale, it's usually not for sale long. Especially the smaller ones.

Thanks for the feedback. Tohatsu is about $1500 cheaper than the suzuki and the evinrude, for that big of a price difference i think i will have to go with the tohatsu.

I haven't had my 40 hp Tohatsu that long 10/19 and have over 60 hrs on it and it runs like a champ. So far no complaints.

Tohatsu all day. If possible, I would wait until they release their new tiller handle. It has the trim switch in the throttle like the yamaha and merc big tillers.

If money weren’t an option, go Honda. Best outboard hands down. I’ve got a Merc now, just celebrated 5 years ownership with over 5,000 hours running time. It’s basically a tohatsu. This motor has performed very well under extra heavy use. I have had one series issue that cost me nearly two grand, three separate certified mechanics, before having a coworker friend successfully diagnose and fully repair the diafram within the low pressure fuel pump as the cause. I’m a extremist outdoorsmen, I fish Santee 90% of the time, my motor runs from the time I take it off the trailer until I load it. If anyone is harder on an outboard I’d like to see it. You wouldn’t go wrong getting the tohatsu is what I’m trying to say!

I got a Honda a few years ago cause they had a 3% loan happening. Check Honda out too.

I love my 50hp Tohatsu tiller steer. 3 years old and gets used 3-4 times a week.
