    Default Santee/ Goat Island

This not a fishing report, but hopefully someone on the forum can provide some information. In the late 60s through the 70s my grandfather and I fished out of Goat Island Resort. I remember we used to go out to the main body of the lake and there was the island at the mouth of Tawcaw Creek. On the northern side of the island there used to be a stump partially out of the water with a large steel cross like pin on it. We used to tie up on that stump and I caught some of the largest crappie ever in my life. I was a Trooper in Horry County when Hugo hit and I know it destroyed all the cypress trees that used to be in the lake. After looking at a topo of the lake I noticed a good shelf in the general area where that stump was. Just curious if anyone on here remembers or fished that spot back in the day. Would love to locate that spot again!

I fish that general area often, there is still some fine Crappie fishing in that area, though you don’t see the folks tied up or anchored as you once did. Most troll, or jig/minnow fish over brush. There continues to be no shortage of stumps, logs, and cypress trees. I don’t recall seeing a stump marked as you stated, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. The marker could be missing, or I’ve never paid it any attention.

I shot fish in a bow tournament there once. I think when I came out of TawCaw to the left was Black's Bottoms and to the right the Cow Pasture?!? I don't have my map handy and it's been too long so I'm guessing. I dont remember seeing any island at the end of TawCaw though but then it coulda been there and I rode around it....dunno.

The island is there, it’s goat island, hence the name of the marina. You are correct about black bottom and the cow pasture.

Is that little country club/dance hall still about half way out of TC creek? We stopped by there one night and had a beer or two when we were on that part of the lake and lets just say it was a "very cheerful" place later in the night.

I remember fishing the Cow Pasture for bream and bass. Black Bottom also. There was a couple of good spots on black Bottom for crappie as well. Cow Pasture produced some good break back in the day!

Red bank is on the other side of the lake, near Mill Creek. Steep, clay banks that are along the river channel.
