Lake Murray Birthday and Father's Day Reports
This past weekend was both my 30th birthday (Friday) and Father's Day and I couldn't think of a better way to spend them than with a little time on the water. A few weeks ago, I received a call from one of my best friends that currently lives and works in Pittsburgh, PA. The stars were aligning and he was going to be in town towards the end of last week. Plans started to form and we decided that a birthday trip was in order so that we could get some overdue catching up and fishing done. Tripp came into town on Thursday night and spent the night with us. We started our "catching up" Thursday night and stayed up a little too late to see the sunrise Friday morning LOL. Needless to say, we were moving a little slow Friday morning, but after eating a little breakfast and playing with the girls we headed out towards the lake and started fishing about 8:30 AM.
First stop of the morning proved to be one of the best and my jig got thumped on the first cast. It was a flurry of bites to start out and we added several fish to the box before moving on to fish other areas. Overall, the fishing was slow and many of the spots that produced in past trips were dry. We stayed on the move and covered a lot of water before calling it quits at 2:00 PM. Final tally was around 30 crappie, 8 bream, and 2 bass caught and we kept 20 crappie and a bream. Size was down a little bit with no "big" fish, but the keepers were solid fish. Water temps are on the rise and we saw 88-89 degrees most of the day. Casting and jigging both produced, but casting was the best. We focused on shady spots around various types of cover including docks, wood, bridges, and brush with all types yielding fish. Color did not seem to matter, but most were caught on yellow with black flake and junebug/chart. The fishing was pretty good, but the fellowship was outstanding! Hopefully, we can get together again before another 6-7 years pass.
With Father's Day on Sunday, it seemed only fitting that I'd take my oldest "partner in training" to the lake for a little outing. I wasn't too concerned with catching fish as long as we could boat a few. As luck would have it, we did just that. Now, it was a chore to keep little Ms. Raelyn occupied and in the boat LOL, but we did manage to catch a few crappie for her to see first hand and she had a great time driving the boat, casting her rod, playing with the poor fish in the livewell, and of course swimming. We only stayed on the water a little over an hour because of the heat, but it was worth every minute! We stopped for a Bug Juice and she was out like a light for our trek home!!
