Got out for a couple hours after work on 3/27. No wind for a change. Go figure since I just ordered a new drift sock. Tight lined 3 crappie rods and 3 Santee rigs for cats. Ended with 2 crappie both around 11” and caught on brush in 25FOW. Picked up one channel cat around 2.5 pounds in 25 FOW and two female blues drifting in 48-52FOW. Blues were sent back. Also found a few of the elusive white perch.

One rod, one jig, one fish at a time.
So how do you know they were females if they were released?
Catfish are easier to tell than most other fish. Bigger blues you can tell by head structure, color (sometimes), but the easiest way is to look directly in front of their anal fin. Males typically have a bump or nipple like protrusion directly in front of the anal fin. Females, just appear to have one slightly bigger anal canal.
Here is a link to a page that a PhD. student from V. Tech wrote with some pretty good pictures. I like to be able to try and ID males vs females this time of the year so I can release females to lay their eggs. Being that we are probably less than a month away from the spawn.
