Default Santee area - any good to live?

Long story I'll try to make short. I am located near Wichita KS and have a job opportunity in Orangeburg SC which I am strongly considering. My wife and I are looking to retire within 100 or so miles of there in 5 years or thereabouts. I have a decent boat (set up for crappie fishing) I would like to bring for this job as my wife will not be coming immediately and I will have lots of time to get out. On the map, the Santee area with golf (my other passion) and fishing right there looks like it would make a good place to look to live.

Does anyone know what might be available in that area as far as safe boat/equipment storage and also rental homes/apartments?

I would really like to find a way to make this move but I'm sure my time frame will be compressed due to the job. Any help toward advancing my research would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Kevin

Orangeburg is a good place to live but Santee would be better you should have no trouble finding a nice place to live where you can stow your stuff in your yard. If you like country living there are a lot of small towns near Santee that will be within a reasonable commute to Orangeburg. There are storage yards all over the place so that should be no problem.

Orangeburg would be the better option as far as renting apartments goes. Santee does have some, but limited. Rental houses, or houses to purchase, Both Orangeburg and Santee offer plenty. I'm unsure of your income, but some of these places will be pricey, especially if on the water, or in one of the better developments. Orangeburg Country club is a beautiful private golf course located in Orangeburg, and cost is at an affordable rate. In addition, there are many public, well kept courses within a 20 mile radius. I grew up fishing Santee, along with playing all the golf courses in the area. I love the area! I live about 20 miles from Orangeburg, and call Santee my home lakes.

Thanks for the input... I have been researching rental properties and it does appear that Orangeburg has many more options.
I plan to give this job a real, hard look so I may ask some more specific questions as they arise.

Thanks again for taking time to provide feedback, I really appreciate it.

Orangeburg is not far from the Congaree, Edisto, and Combahee River which produce good fishing. Stay on Hwy 21 for a quick beach trip.

Santee lakes are GREAT. only problem is (unless Santee, Eutawville , Monks Corner has grown in the past several years) there's NOTHING to do there except fish. Oh, and maybe hunt once you get to know people. I would LOVE it if I didn't already have a great place for the outdoorsman right here where I live.

Santee Cooper Country Club is the nicest of the 3 courses at Santee. It has some pretty nice homes on the course and some are also on Lake Marion. Be pretty cool to live on a golf course and a super fishing lake. The homes are not McMansions but are nice and I would guess reasonable for what you get being waterfront and golf course.
Ink mentioned Orangeburg Country Club and it is several steps up from the Santee courses and has some beautiful homes on it. The course got into financial straits a few years ago and a wealthy businessman bought it and put a couple million into upgrading the course and clubhouse. My club has a reciprocal with them and we play it a few times a year. I
However, if I could live on Lake Marion at Santee Cooper Country Club I'd take it in a jiffy.
