Default Summer Crappie at Clarks Hill

Hello everyone, this is my first year trying to chase crappie during the summer and I can't seem to find them anywhere. I've tried tightliig minnows in deep water and I've fished a few trees out in deep water. Can anyone give me an idea of where I might look. Maybe I'm trying to fish to deep. Thanks

Some people shoot docks (shade) near deep water. Others pull crankbaits if you have lots of white crappie. A good place to start is near bait depending on what type crappie you have in your lake. Here is a picture that might help you figure out where to look.

That illustration seems pretty accurate compared to my thoughts and experience as to where each species should be targeted.

All of the creeks that i fish at usually have a resident population that stays there year round. Look for brushpiles 15 to 30 feet deep, crappie will usually be over the top of them. If you don't have a good fish finder, buy one. They are worth their weight in gold. Crappie usually will hit jigs, crankbaits or minnows in their preferred comfort zone. Usually they will stay above the thermocline. Always have your bait slightly above them and not below. Started sinking my own brushpiles about 15 years ago, that gives me a good starting point. With gps today repeat success can be assured.

Summer crappie on the Hill will still be close to the places you found them at in the spring. I have not had to do much looking to find crappie on the Hill but finding them doesn't mean they are feeding. Early morning has always been the best time to fish the lake. You can find feeding fish one day and go back the next morning and not find them biting. When the bite stops it's over. Sure you may pick up a fish here or there but fighting the heat makes staying on the lake tough with a very slow bite.

If you can find fish mixed in balls of bait then early morning hours can produce quite a few for the livewell. Gotta be there and on fish pretty early though (daylight) because when the sun tops the trees everything starts moving a bit deeper. By 9AM the better bite is over. Atleast that has been my experience of late summer fishing (water temps bumping near 90*'s at daylight). Good luck to ya.
