Size: 13.1 KBWell John the fish were much more hungry for Tim's jig than mine, even though we were using the same jig.

We hit the water right at sunrise and had great weather with a cool cloud cover. However, bright sunny days seem to push the fish into the brush better, so we had to work for our limit.

If you jig brush piles you are going to get hung up occasionally. Smart me had one reel set up with braid and a light wire hook on the jig. I was able to retrieve every hangup with no trouble and never lost the jig. I also had not the first touch on it. If I was more proficient at this technique I may have had better luck, but I switched back to the mono and caught fish so the jury is still out on this topic. It takes a bit of practice to get the knack of this type fishing as I was reminded today. I have taken friends who are good fishermen on this style fishing and watched them struggle to get (or feel) the bite. It is a fun method and feeling that thump is what it is all about. So each time I learn a bit more and it is fun watching someone like Tim who is very good at his haul the in. We fished dozens of piles and some held no fish and a couple we got 3 to 5 fish. We were in less than 10 FOW all day and some of the best piles were in 5 or 6 FOW, so the theory of having to fish deep in the hot summer apparently was never shared with the Santee Crappie.
We fished hard till about 3 PM and loaded up to head home.
Many thanks to the Inkdabber for a great trip,

Since you don't see me with huge catches very often I thouht I would close with a picture of a nice one I caught and another cooler shot and you can actually see my name on the cooler.

I bet you was wore out !!!!

    Default Finishing touches on trip

Got out the cooker and fried up a batch of fresh crappie fillets. Our older son came over and joined us for dinner. Man it is hard to beat fresh crappie fillets. Had some coleslaw and baked sweet potato and ice tea to go with it. I weighed one of the larger fish and he was just under 2 lbs. Most ran 1.5 to 1.75 lbs with only a couple at a pound. We threw back several that were 8 or 9 inches along with a couple of little fellows not much bigger than the jig. Not sure how they got it in their mouth.

These cool mornings sure feel good after all the heat. I noticed our bottle tree is getting a bit of fall color to it. See the red on the right side?
