7-19,Old School fishing

Ive been seeing this while going across the pond to water the cows,and being Im on call this weekend,(which means no fishing outta the baot for crappie) i decided to try em (without graphite rods or even a reel,,,just old school cane pole.
So I went to the barn,got and old cane pole that was used for a runner for my gourds to "run" along,then got my brim box with hooks ,lead and corks and got some line.Next I needed some bait,just happened to know where a wasp nest was.

Got it all rigged up,down to the water and in no time at all,,bam,had a bite
Caught this handsome male.,,caught 2 males and 2 females,put em back to let em finish thier business.

Great post! Just seeing those Bream beds gets me excited !!! It has been a long time since I fished the beds in the farm ponds back home in Darlington. Brings back great memories. Thanks.

Enjoyed it Sam, I can't remember the last I used a cane pole. I know it's been a long long time but I can tell you I've never used a wasp for bait.(lol) I've always thought about it but have never done it. Just pull the larva out and hook it? It want tear apart? What size hook? Thanks

Good thread Sam, been many years since I used a cane pole. Wasp are great bait but getting the live wasp away from the nest always seemed to be the biggest problem for me. LOL took many stings going after them when I was a lot younger.

Hey fellas,you just take the hookpoint and stick it in the larvas head/mouth then lift the hook and it will pull the larva out,then thread it the rest of the way like a worm.These I had today was the small wasp,I call em guinea wasp,,looks sorta like a yellow jacket.Thebest kind is the big red wasp cause of the size of the larva.As far as hook size # I dont know,,just your regular brim hook.If you think a brim can steal a cricket quick,,thats slow motion as to how quick he can suck one of the larvas off the hook,,,you will not get a second chance,,just have to rebait as for they are very soft Mabey you can tell in the pictures.Most of the places with the topcovered over is larva that has taken the shape of the wasp,I usually dont use those.One of these you can see the hook in the larvas head/mouth the next is when you pull up/out the hook and larva is on it


Ronnie,I too have been stung a few times back in my youth,,we'd just knock the nest down and take off running but in my older/slower days,I spray the wasp,or dash a wee bit of gas on em and that way I dont have to run!! Heres one more that fell victum

I had wondered if gas would harm the larvae, good to know it doesn't

Those little guinea wasp was the ones that got me a few years ago in the shop. I turned on the air conditioner and I guess they had built their nest in the fan housing because when I turned it on the wasp were thrown all over me!! Those little guys can cause a lot of pain.

We used wasp larvae a lot growing up. One time me and my cousin were fishing with larvae and when we quit he put the nest in his little green tackle box. A couple days later we went fishing again when he opened his tackle box guess what had hatched out. Luckily I was standing far enough away that I had a good head start on him. He got stung quite a few times . For some reason he did not think it was as funny as I did.

I grew up using wasp nest, my grandpa had chicken houses, so we had plenty of wasp and red worms, they loved that chicken crap, we used gas some, but mostly used waterguns, drown the nest , the wasp would fall off and we would grab the nest and run, worked most of the time and we had fun just getting the nest. we loved danger! Made us tuff! I cant repeat some of the dangerous stuff we tried!

As a kid, someone told me to tie newspaper to a long stick , light it and hold under the nest. When the wasp tried to fly it would burn their wings off. What they didn't tell me was to not stand under the nest,. Ever had a bunch of pissed off wasp falling on your head?
From then on it was red worms from a manure pile at a friends mule barn.
