Default how do you night fish for crappie?

my mom just got a lake house at wateree on monday ... we are planning on going on a little fishing trip this weekend i know how to catch everything in that lake except night time crappie i was just lookin for a few pointers!!

first question>>> can i just put a white utility light on my dock and face it towards the water..just wondering if that will work. or should i just go under collonels creek bridge and catch fish off of other peoples lights?

second question... what type of fish will it attract to my dock. will baitfish come to the white light? if they come will the stripers crappie and bass follow.....

i am a noob at night fishing for crappie so sorry for the dumb questions just figuring out what i need to produce some fish. if you are going to be on lake wateree saturday or saturday night look for 3 boys on a 19 foot duracraft with a johnson 40 on the back thats me and my buddys just holler at us it would be cool tomeet one of you guys.

i also heard that the catfish bite at wateree is doing pretty good

The lights attract plankton, which in turn attracts the bait fish. The bait fish attracts the larger predator fish like crappie, white perch, bass, etc. The color of the light doesn't really matter to the plankton, but green lights do not blind your night vision like white lights do.

    Good luck.

Rango doesn't post a lot on here now, but he was the night stalking King of Wateree. I tried to find a link to his article on night stalking but I could not find it. if you do a search on "Rango" you will find numerous post on the subject.

Anyone have the link to Rango's article??

You can try getting a white light low towards the water on your dock and see what it'll draw. As mentioned, you will NEED the baitfish in order to draw other fish. But...keep in mind not all places on a lake are equal to drawing and holding fish. When I used to night fish I spent the last hour and a half before dark "scouting" likely places by idling around looking for bait and fish on the graph. I was also checking in places that would allow me to set up and fish out of the wind when it blew from the east or the west, north, or south. When I found what looked good to me I'd anchor good from the front and the back of the boat, lower a couple of starfire submersible lights into the water, get my overhead lights set up, get baited up and wait for the lights to do their job drawing the baitfish which also drew the crappies. For me....my better setups were usually in water between 20' and 30' deep and usually I wasnt over any kind of cover. Do some searches on "nightstalking". I'm sure you'll find PLENTY to read and after some research I'm sure you'll have ALOT of confidence understanding what youre looking for and what to do when you start night fishing. Good luck to ya.
