Went for a few hours last night. Had a ton of bait at both spots we fished. But the first spot only produced perch. And the second spot was mostly perch with 5 or 6 crappie in the mix. Does fishing depth of our bait change the odds of catching perch vs crappie? We were in 30 fow both times. And the bait was on the bottom when we got there and came up off the bottom to the lights.

I have had luck fishing close to the bottom for crappie when a lot of perch comes to feed on the bait fish you pull in by the light. Perch does make it hard to catch crappie but they are feeding also. You may even try throwing a line with a lighted float away from the boat. Put your minnow 4 to 6' deep. Some nights the floated line will save the night

I tried counting the turns up from the bottom, 2,3,4 etc. About time to leave my buddy caught a few crappie at 10 turns off the bottom. Thats probaby 15' deep I'd guess. I should've tried a lit float. I had one settin there. Didnt think of it at the time.

When I was nightstalking I'd generally try setting up in 25'-30' of water and I'd start my lines at 10', 12', 15', & 17' deep and as long as the current allowed (Lake Russell ALWAYS has current with pulling or pumping back water) I'd have 1 or 2 bobbers out set @ 5' deep. I always figured if the crappie were deeper they could see my minners when they looked towards the light. I'd adjust lines as the fish came up towards the top to keep the minners above 'em.

Aint found no where them perch wont hide. Last time out we ended catchin crappie about 3-5 feet anchored in 28.Cant explain it but they was feedin right in the lights on the bait we had pulled in.
