To me,
longlining = trolling at a speed that will control you baits, jigs or cranks with lines out the back 'or' front with your baits, jigs or cranks following your boat.
Tight lining = trolling at a slow speed of .05 or less with enough weight to keep the line vertical = spider rigging
Pushing = trolling at speeds faster than .05 with heavy weights keeping the lines close to vertical to control depth with bait, jigs or cranks

I've been Tight lining, long lining spider rigging and pushing for Strippers all this time and didn't know it.
Now all I have to do is get new gear, jigs etc and I'm ready to start making mistakes. I mean catching fish. :-0

I define those terms a little differently ...

Longline trolling ... lines/baits way behind the boat
Spider rigging ... lines/baits near vertical & boat moving slow
Tightline ... tied up or anchored & fishing straight down (boat not moving)
Pushing/pulling ... trolling cranks or jigs out the front/back/side of boat (generally faster than spider rigging speeds) Extra weights are added to control depth at those speeds.

It's all relative ... and some cross over in definition vs application.

Stumps definition is the what I feel is the closest. The different terms originated from different parts of the country, but refer to the same basic techniques. To simplify I will say tight lining, pushing, slow trolling, straight lining, and spider rigging are all the same basic technique. Rods can be positioned any where on the boat, but the front is most popular. You are fishing a precise depth, using different weights to maintain a tight vertical line when moving a variety of speeds depending of fishes depth, water depth, current or wind. The most popular bais are minnows, jigs, or a combination of both. Pulling, fast trolling, and long lining are the same basic technique as well. Rods can be placed anywhere on the boat, with sides and back of boat being the most popular. This is done by putting the boat in motion via the trolling motor or outboard, casting or releasing a set amount of line out. Both, boat speed and amount of line let out controls the depth the baits run. The most popular baits are crank baits, jigs, or a combo of jigs and minnows.

Longlining...a set speed from the trolling motor (.6 mph or faster) pulling jigs or cranks way behind the boat (usually, but I have pulled them just a short piece from the boat to keep 'em shallow too) from the sides or the back of the boat
Tightlining....lines verticle whether anchored or slowly drifting.
Pushing...to me is the same as spider rigging. A set up with 6 or more long poles fan casted around the front of the boat. My rendition of spider rigging is moving very slow, "bumping" along. Usually under .4 mph.

I havent tightlined any in many years.Tightlining would be just like you downrod fish for stripers,cept most all rods out front of boat.
