I fish Hartwell regularly and I catch far more white crappie than black crappie. The fish I catch spawn at generally the same time. I tend to catch more black crappie in muddy/stained water and in the backs of coves where there's a lot of clutter and trash (branches, logs, leaves, etc.) in the water. It's rare that I catch a black crappie in water deeper than 15 feet. The white crappie tend to be in clearer and deeper water holding tight to structure.
