Default Down Imaging on 898c SI

I have a 898c SI and I can't get it to show fish with down imaging. I went with a buddy that has an Elite 5 DSI and it was really easy to see bait balls and even fish around the bait balls. We would find fish on his fish finder and then stop and catch them. I tried some of the spots the next day with my boat and couldn't figure out how to make the fish show up on my 898 using down imaging. I caught fish there, but they just wouldn't show up on my humminbird like they did on his Lowrance. I played with the settings, but never could get it. I also have an Elite 7 ti, but don't have the transducer for it. It's connected to the built in transducer on my trolling motor, so it only does 2D. Should I invest in the total scan transducer for it or will the 898 work if I get the settings right?

The HB SI units do not have a "down pointing" piezo (like your buddy's Elite does) ...

The SI unit gets the DI image by taking the data from the "side pointing" SI piezoes and computer generating an image that "looks like" a DI image ...

So your buddy's Elite (and other dedicated DI units) are actually getting its strongest echoes directly under the boat ...

Your SI unit is getting its strongest echoes out to the sides ...and then rearranging those SI echoes into a DI looking image ...

By turning the contrast down to 3 or 4 and turning the sensitivity up,will help. But like Rickie stated, the strongest signal is not directly below the transducer. 455khz,works best on do also.

Thanks, that makes sense. Is there a transducer that would make my elite 7 ti work like the elite 5 dsi? I noticed that there are 2 available transducer for it, a downscan and totalscan. Does the totalscan have dedicated down pointing piezos or should I get the downscan transducer?

The Elite ti can use the HDI xducer ...which is 2d and Downscan ...

The Elite ti can use the Totalscan xducer ...which is 2d, Downscan and Sidescan ...

Ok, thanks. I ordered the totalscan transducer. Hopefully that will help with down imaging.

I have the 899 with the hd transducer,my question is do they make a dedicated transducer for down imaging and if not what would be the best settings short of getting another unit

HB does make dedicated DI xducers ... but they are for dedicated DI units ...

We have experimented with dedicated DI xducers on HB SI units with good results ...
