Still there is that nagging question of it doing well in tree laydowns and seeing fish, all in 20' of water.
However, I would be very confident of finding huge steel bridges at 100'.
Then again, I'm already a pro on getting hung up on large underwater structures!
" Ok, according to my $2500.00 fish finder, the bridge is right below us.
Watch me get hung up........
BINGOOOoooooo....."
Not real sure why you guys think a Chirp unit will not perform in shallower water? A faster processor and more data can only improve at all depths. I have seen the Touch units and I fish Humminbirds myself, but there is no comparison between the performance of the Garmins at this time. I will try to get some of the guys to stop in shallower water this weekend or next and take some shots of structure. Though, with snapper opening up not sure they will take the time. One of the neighboring fire chiefs has a 7 inch version and he dives a lot and might. I'll ask him. I would love to have one myself, but cost benefit isn't there to spend over $1000 for my fishing. If you are spending in the $2000 range, I would not put it towards any other brand. I want Chirp, but ain't going to pay new technology price for it. It could not increase my catch ratio that much and I don't take snapshots.
I think I could sell my unit add 400-500 get the 840.
But I do like my touch screen.
Get a new 2 yr warranty with the 840.
I enjoy the tech side of fishing.
You will like controlling it with your Iphone or Ipad. Some of the Garmins are touch, is the 840 not?
840, not touch, 740 is, but coming from a 9" screen to a 7 may be too hard
Wonder why the 7 and not the 8?
There was a member here that went to the ICAST show and I asked him to ask the Garmin group about a Touch 10 series. Well, they told him their wasn't enough interest in it. I doubt that very much since Lowrance has sold a ton of the 12T's. If Garmin had a Touch 10 or 12 I think I would be forced to purchase one.
I know you mentioned 8's but same principal with the bigger models, they need to add a few Touch models or at least 1 over 7".
