I started to use 180 degree Down Imaging scanning for about two years ago with my Humminbird 570 DI:

I thought that the depth till bottom is 50ft, but it is 25ft, and this is not a 200ft long ship - this is a big boat 100ft long and 25ft wide. Nevertheless staying still right above the deck just in 19ft of it you will not see any deck details, they will be blinded with 40ft dark spot of water column. It is does not matter if the deck is tilted or not. The same with the depth say 50ft, your hooks will be seen somewhere 50ft aside, and the bottom structure like bushes, stones ets. will not be seen under 100ft dark spot of water column . Bottom structure will be seen only quite aside of the point of still staying. These devices are really not good for vertical fishing.

I think in a "shallow water" application (of water depth less than the boat length)...the 360 can be used effectively for vertical fishing...
There is an offset setting that allows the bow of the boat to be seen on the display to show exactly where the fisherman would be standing while vertical fishing at the bow ...which (in shallow water)...puts the fisherman's bait over the bottom in the 360 image... and not over the "black hole" in the middle...
This is kosmo's image...the 2d confirms that the "blue dot" in the 360 image (which represents the bow of the boat)... is directly over the brush...
I think this offset setting is even adjustable for the user's specific boat length...
Rickie
rickie, you are correct with all you posted.i have a 21ft. boat with transom mount 360 with the offset set to 21ft. I was vertical fisbing.those lines going to tbe surface on the 2d was my jig being picked up and dropped.i not sure if i could do that with a bow mounted 360.seems to me that the water column issue that vik3 mentioned would prevent me from having the structure,my jig and 2d showing at the same time along with the 360
Rickie/Kosmo can you turn contour mode on or off on the 360? Would that help see you jig and fish, brush? Ie when your sitting in top of it?

this is a stump thats under my boat.ive got tbe water column removed..
