snake I have the concept of the water column and depth or atleast I think I do, the farther the shadow is away then the higher in the water column the fish is, the closer the shadow the deeper for the most part. Now what I do not understand is then how you can determine the distance how far out to each side a fish is if the shadows are representing depth. I know if it is on left side of screen it is left side of boat and vv. If I had my range set to 60 feet on each side how could I kind of gauge how far out the fish are. If it was a brush pile I could probably eventually locate it but if it was a fish I might not ever know whether I was getting relatively close to it or not.

Most sonars have a distance grid available, but you may have to turn it on....If you have your range set at 80', you will have a grid beginning where the water column meets the bottom and it will have 10' increments out to 80' on both sides (if you are scanning both sides)
Here is a link to one of Kosmo's pics...go to post number 4 and go to the bottom pic with the amber palette. You will see the distance grid

Really interesting thread! Thanks for the entire thing!

A good way to help understand your SI is to ride by a bridge at different distant .the post that comes out of water to the bridge will stop short of coming to top by the distant you are from it. If it has a cross beam that is a foot under water and you are about 10 feet from it then it will look like it is 10 feet deep, try going by it many times and it will help a lot.I agree that SI in water column will be the distant away will be shown as distant deep in water column
