yea your right,i do spend to much money on this stuff but i do enjoy playing / experimenting with stuff. (well Im off to go get some more gas.. Its only $ 3.60 a gallon today)

I used simplifide towfish and got those imagies much closer to the bottom (5-10 feet) , using additional two pound weigt. One can see that the small fish is around all the structures:

Vik....I really like your "simplified" towfish...that's very creative...
Cool shots too.. :ThumbsUp
Which unit are using for this setup...??
Rickie
Thank you, :) this is my Humminbird 385 ci DI/SI unit.
I tried to modify Side Imaging views on HB units, but it look like it is better to modify Down Imaging.
Let us imaging that the boat with ordinary DI transducer goes above tree, cylinder and cube. Tree is in the middle, a cylinder is in front and the cube is in the back side 50 feet away of cylinder:

What we will see on 597 DI screen is:

a cylinder and a cube are on the same front side and look very close to each other, that is not real.
What I suggest is to use double crystal Front and Back Down Imaging transducer (like SI transducer) and to use spitted views:

One can see that the objects are separately shown in convenient distinct views. The both views are moving the same way from right to the left.
Let us see how the same objects will look on dedicated SI unit with narrow screen in the same depth range:

The objects look very small and in inconvenient manner, that causes a wish to incline a head left or right… but it doesn’t help much :).
What I offer can be reached by slight change of existing software in small and narrow screen SI units:

Vik...
Is your idea to operate the HB DI units with a new design "Dedicated DI" xducer with left and right crystal instead of the single down-looking crystal in the current XNT 9 DI T or XTM 9 WIDE DI 20 T ...??
Rickie
Yes, it would be good to operate the HB DI units with a new design "Dedicated DI" xducer with left and right crystal instead of the single down-looking crystal, may be just with slightly bigger overlap of the beams under the boat. Bigger overlap is just optional, because existing overlap on SI transducer is good enough, and it gives very real DI pictures for both sides – have a look at this screen shot:

The boat went exactly over the center of that tree and every single branch that is in the middle is shown on both side views, nothing is missed and mixed– this I is why I prefer HB SI, rather than LSS :).
Dedicated DI would show that tree with mixed sides:

DI with left and right crystal would show it separately:

And dedicated SI:

Actually my idea is to provide HB units with option to show views in DI Format – to show vertically both sides front and back (right and left) in vertical splited views. It doesn’t matter how to call it splited F&B DI or vertical SI :).
I think I understand your concept here...of separate left and right crystal piezoes...and also the idea to show the "DI views" of the concept left and right crystal data side by side in a split screen DI view orientation..
This would allow one to descern echoes from the left piezo separated from the echoes in the right piezo ....instead of the confusing blend DI view of all echoes in the present down-looking piezo...
This seems as it would classify the "new design" DI unit as a conventional SI unit (as verbiage dictated by separate left and right piezoes)...but with total coverage slice beams of 45°-800kHz/75°-455kHz....whereas...conventional present SI total coverage slice beams ofof 110°-800kHz/180°-455kHz...
And taking your software change idea of the separated left and right view...I think this would even be beneficial with the present DI from SI views in the conventional SI units....have the option of a split left and right piezo data view...instead of (or in addition to)...the present "blended" DI view from the echo data of both the left and right SI beams...
Rickie
There are more than 20 screen views in my sonar menu, 70% of them I do not use and set them as not visible. All what is needed is to add just one more screen view of both sides in DI Format. Without it 398 SI and 698 SI are useless.
I agree ...I think I only 5 views "Visable" in my 1197...
