Rickie,
My first priority is to have good images. Suitable for framing good. I have a big learning curve ahead of me jumping from a PiranhaMax 220 to a 998. I don't want to learn by looking at bad images. My main Link interaction with the Birds at this point would be for saving the larger number of waypoints and iTracks but if I have to forgo that for the time being so be it.
Greg,
The 998 is not a HD unit. In doing the initial install I'm pretty darn sure the program version displayed was 6.180. It was displayed again at the upgrade. Here is the serial #12060603-0004.
Yes, the 858 was on. I will try with it off. The only other electronics on was the TM. I need to point out that everything for the 998 is mounted at the bow, transducer,GPS,etc. Everything for the 858 is mounted at the transom except the unit itself at the console. The transducers are no closer than 16' apart.
If an older version is something to try, where can I find them to download?
Thank you both for your help.

Greg made a good point about checking for crosstalk interference...(it is possible anytime 2 separate units are running sonar at the same time...their beams can overlap and read each other's stuff)...so check this first as it would be easy to check...
You'll probably need to call HB with your serial number to get the info of the original software version...because I don't think Greg has access to the serial numbers in the database....(he knows the software versions but probably not the serial number units that they were loaded with)...
HB may also give you access to the software version...but if not...Greg can get the actual version download for you...(once we know what the version number is)...
You may actually do what I do for the time being....load 6.610 for use with any new accessory....then reload your older "Stable" version for image study and such....
Loading and reloading software versions is not hard...and usually not dangerous...if you follow the steps correctly...(I've been known to load and reload 3-4 times in a day depending on what I'm fishing or experimenting with)...

Would two transducers 16' apart still expieriance overlap?
Btw, the deepest water seen was 10' if that may come into play. Avg was 3-4'.

I am getting ready to purchase a 998c HD SI, then add the I-pilot link later. I think I'll hold off and see how this unfolds. I don't want to be downloading software on a daily basis.

tsaints,
I got one of the CRC Reps to check your serial number: sure enough your memory is good. Your 998c Si unit was produced with the 6.180 software.
There are a lot of the software downloads in the Downloads section of the SideImagingSoft.com web site. I think that you have to sign up as a member to access then though. If needed you could send me an e-mail requesting the software. Be sure to state the full model name and software version you want and I can send you link to it through TransferBigFiles.com.
It may not be sonar-cross talk but more of an electrical interference through the power system. Shutting off the 858c HD DI will help tell us if it is even the source for this or not. If it is, the next step would be to set the Beam Select menu on the 858c HD DI unit to the 200kHz setting to see if that changes anything or not. We need to pinpoint the source of this before correcting it.

HB version downloads...Login
(I would still check Greg's other suggestions first....it's entirely possible to be something other than the 6.610 software....)

Thank you both. I will try again Fri to get out and play with this.

I have a 998 on the console and a 798HD on the bow. If you would like I can post a couple of snapshots taken, one with the trolling motor transducer in the water, the other with the trolling motor transducer out of the water. You can see the crosstalk which is similar to yours but not as bad.
