On every unit I've seen, and that doesn't include an Elite 7, the base map is little more than a crude blue box that tells you about where the lake is.

So far as I knew, the 7's had nothing but the generic "you're either in the water or you're not" base maps. :dono

yeap. I catch fish on land sometimes.
I bought a 797 when HB first came out with the side imaging. Has been a great product for me. Is amazing what you can find with that unit. I want to buy a 998 for the console and move my 797 to the bow. Maybe one day.
Gotta know when to and how to..:ThumbsUp

I have owned 7 lowrance 10 inch models. All have been sent for repairs or leaking. I have had 2 HB 1198's for 2 years. They are pain free. And a better product.
See now this is the kind of info that can help to decide on choice, but in saying that a person needs to do more research into why and how, just can not imagine someone owning (7) 10 inch units, hopefully that was a typing error. I currently have an hds 7-gen 2 lss2 and have had no issues, also very satisfied with same. DK
I have three HDS units on my boat, the newest one is over two years old. They have never given me any problems, the same goes for the HDS 5 that I sold. Both companies make good units, go look, push buttons and if possible go out with fishermen that have the models you are looking at to compare them on the water. Personally I don't put much faith in what guys at the big stores have to say about electronics, most sell but don't own them. Back in February I was in bass pro and went by the electronics counter and almost laughed out loud at some of the bs this guy was spouting out. They didn't even have the new HDS Touch units on display.
