I hook them just in front of the dorsal fin and bring it through beside the dorsal fin. They stay alive much longer that way I've found.

I really don't think it matters if they are alive or not. Of course I never let my cast just sit once casted, I'm always retrieving. Maybe having the minnow alive on a still cast will benefit you more.
I hook them two ways, thru the eye sockets or thru the belly and out the back. The last method keeps them on the hook longer and good for fast retrieves. It kills the minnow faster but I still catch tons of fish either way.
I like hooking thru both lips unless it's a very fast bite. Then anywhere I get 'em stuck works.Thumbs Up
Yeah, I recon if they are biting it don't really matter where ya hook um. I like to fish at night with flood lights. Sometime I think they would bite a naked hook then! LOL
