I've only used the live kind and don't think there's anything consistently better for brim. Never have much trouble keeping them alive for a few days. I just dunk the cage briefly in water every now and then. The water clings to the mesh and the crickets help themselves to a drink.

Drop a couple of slices of Potato into your cricket cage. The potato has starch and water for the crickets. Keep the cage in a unlit area like your garage when not being used for fishing and your crickets will last for 2 weeks or so. Just change the potato slice about every 2-3 days depending on the number of crickets in the cage.
