Out yesterday.....
got 3 crappies and a couple of 'goon' fish. These came on a 1/32 oz chartreuse head, purple krystal flash, chartreuse kraft hair tail (one of my ties). You can see the jig in the mouth of both fish. Used 4# Vanish on a light action rod.
Found these in 5-6 ft of water, right up next to the downstream side of a bridge piling.....upper fish came off the first piling, the lower fish came off the 2nd. Got one of the crappies off the 3rd piling.
The upper goon went 15.75", the lower went 16". The crappies went home for lunch, the goons are still swimming....

Well I took a guy out 2 Saturdays ago for about half a day and we only got 4 keepers with lots of throw back crappie, bunch of pretty large bream and several small bass. I was not happy with the bigger crappie as they just didn't bite well at all. We had one 13" and one 15" which were nice, but needed more of them, LOL!
Just nice getting out though huh? At least you didn't get skunked!

Nope - didn't get skunked - and that was considering that this was my first time on this body of water - no map available - no idea what was below the surface for depths w/o putting the boat over it.

Looks like a good mixed bag, top one looks like a smallie?? lrg mouth and crappie ta boot. I used to hit pretty much nothing but bass, all catch and release, till I found out my daughter would eat 3/4 of a bag of perch and leave me 1/4!!:) Them smallies are a hoot on ultralight setups.
Wish I could be fishing in the middle of the week also! Great job UG.

Didnt get a real good look at the jig but from your description of it and from the pictures of the fish it looks like a keeper. It's always good to get back on the water and catch a few.;):)

Nice goons, first time I heard them called that. This year the goons like my jigs better than crappie, guess if I fish for goons maybe the crappie will bite.
-
Nice catch - eat goons - free the crappie

Beats staying at home on the porch. Congratulations.

Attica:
You are correct - the upper fish is a smallie.
JungleJim:
My application of the word 'goon' - Around here - the largies are refered to as "green carp" - by the walleye addicts. Don't know of any such term for the smallies.
Ledhed:
My wife asked what I caught - told her I kept the crappies and ate them. The she says "what about the bass?".....which surprised me, as I haven't kept a bass in years....cause there are better eating fish to be had - crappie being one of them.
