Catfish on the fly

I went to a local reservoir yesterday evening to try for some catfish. We caught them there around this time last year, so decided to give it a try.

They were caught on a fly created by Terry Wilson called the "Bluegill Bugger". I fished it about 3 1/2 feet under a strike indicator, letting it bounce around on the waves created by the wind. Here's a pic of the fly

That's not all Steve catches. He catches Spoonbills (or whatever the prehistoric things are called) too or maybe I should say he snags Spoonbills. But I doubt he eats those things. Nice going, Steve. Fried Catfish are good eating.

I have eaten Spoonbill, aka Paddlefish, from the Neosho River, but I wouldn't anything from the Arkansas River here in Tulsa. The catfish came from Lake Yahola in Mohawk Park. I'm having some of them for dinner tonight.

This year during my winter trip to ARK. to a lake I have fished for years I caught several channel cats using a wet fly (sinking muddler minnow). Most in the 2-3 lb range, largest I got up to the surface looked to be 5 lbs, but my tippet gave out. I never hooked catfish in this lake until this year?

I use a leach pattern while fly fishing for channel catfish in Black or Olive green or brown.

After a slow start to cat on the fly this year been playing catch up with black beadhead muddlers. In free running smallie streams.

I have fly fished a little but I am not that good at fly fishing. I would amagine catching those cat fish would be a real eye opener and lots of fun.

This is one of my favorite fish to catch on fly! It is really fun to catch a 5kg+ catfish on a 6 to 7 weight fly rod!

I'm going to explain my simple technique I use to catch them. Firstly I look for activity on the water, then I start tapping the near the activity. I tap the fly 3 times on the same spot, then let it sink for a second or 2 and then repeat the action. Normally I stay at one spot for about 5 minutes before I move on. The strike is very aggressive and sometimes they swallow the fly!

The other technique I use is to look for fish that are rising, then I cast my fly in front of them and normally they will smack it!

Fly Fishing

While I normally do not target catfish, I catch them inadvertantly. However, I really do enjoy hooking and fighting them. They often taken me deep into the backing.
My top spot is Lake Manatee which is near my home in Sarasoat, Fla. I have taken channel cats to 17 pounds on Wooly Buggers and nymphs.

A great fighting fish!
