Making Pony Head Jigs check list

Can those who make them make sure I have my supply list correct with the correct size materials...I'm most concerned about the ring and blade size as everything else should be good to go...

I will be making 1/4 and 1/8 oz
MOLD
1/0 hooks 570...but gonna try some sickles too
#12 swivell
#1 split ring
#1 blade

Is the #1 ring or #1 blade to big for the 1/8 and 1/4 or will the work ok? Should I go with the #0 ring?

What of I go up to 1/2, 3/4 or even an ounce later...Will those size rings and blades be too small?

Your list for making 1/4 and 1/8 oz looks pretty good

1/0 hooks 570...but gonna try some sickles too -

If you want all the same hooks size then your all set - if you want you could use a size 1 hook on the 1/8 and 1/0 on the 1/4

#12 swivell

Up through a 1/4oz I prefer the #12 but if you go bigger your gonna have to switch to a size #10

#1 split ring
#1 blade

Split rings and blades are good at #1 but remember - when you make your own you can try any size you want or any style you want - The only exception to this rule is with Willow leaf blades you almost have to go one size smaller depending on hook size so the blade doesn't interfere with hook-ups.

No there fine - I have size 1's which was all I had until I got replacement order from Hagens - Now on the 1/16 and 1/32 I prefer a 0 or 1/0 split ring which is kinda in between the 0 and 1.

Here again yes and no!!! IMO it depends on the size of hook your gonna be using. On the 1/4's that I make if I go to a 1/0 or 2/0 hook then I'll bump the blade up to a 2 but you don't have to - try different sizes of blades until you get the size that works best for you. You'll know when the crappie start knocking the crap out of it.

Also you aren't restricted to using just Colorado or Indianna blades in silver. Try any color of blade you want. Experimenting is half the fun.

dem cahjohn's is south loweseana call dem sac-a-lait...meaning sac of milk...They used to use an onion sac for a livewell over the side of de boat and when Beadroux came in from fishing with a sac of crappie some one said dem fish so tender when you got a sac of crappie u got a sac of milk...ahhhh eeeee....sac-a-lait was born...I think it comes from the milky color of the water left when you clean a bunch of them filets...

Sounds like you were doing your homework. Might want to try jump rings (aka butt rings) instead of split rings – I haven’t tried it yet. I think cadman is doing this with his pony heads. There was discussion on TU with some jig makers doing this on their spinners..

Cadman put me onto "Butt Rings"

So far I really like them better than Split Rings ..

Yes, that would be me. I started doing this awhile ago on stand-up spinning jigs for walleye, and from there it carried over to all other spinning blades on jigs. Reason being is this. #1. They are cheaper than split rings. #2 They are easier to put on then split rings, even if you don't paint your blades and worry about scratching them with split rings. #3. When I fished them with stand-up jigs most of those jigs were fished for walleye in rocky structure. The jig blade many time got stuck in the rocks, and with the butt rings, if you pulled hard enough you would get you jig back minus the blade. That was fine for me, this way I only had to put a new blade on and continue fishing instead of putting on a whole new jig. In my opinion, it is plain easier and more economical no matter which way you look at it to use Butt Rings(aka as jump rings). Just my opinion. Give it a try.

BTW...........JSC has a much easier way of putting them on then I did. I will let him explain if he chooses, since it was his idea....

OK will add a little that may help some one.
Attached is fly tieing vise Pix with the set up ....
1. Clamp Butt Ring in vise with split up.
2. Put blade and swivele on.
3. With a pair of needle nose bend the open end to the other end (Vise end)
It should "Snap" then align it.

Jump or Butt Rings:
There are (3) sizes. Size #1 which is .028 thk wire, inside diameter is .115 and outside diameter is .171. They are described in the book as 1/8” ring dia. It is called that because they are measured around the centerline of the ring diameter. Size #2 is .035 thk wire, inside diameter is .164 and outside diameter is .234. They are described in the book as 3/16” ring dia. There is also a Size #5, these are pretty big, and I don’t think anyone would use these for the size jigs you guys make. They are described in the book as 5/16” ring dia. Most guys are going to use the Size #1. This is only to attach the blade to the swivel. They are available at Stamina which is where I bought mine. Jann’s netcraft and Lure craft also carry them, but I can’t tell you if the sizes are comparable. Maybe someone else can chime in here if they have bought them..............If you need them translated into mm, PM me and I will translate all the decimals for you.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the NUMBER means MM? Like a number 5 should be 5 MM and a number 6 should be 6mm?

hey guys. I tested the cheap jump rings I got off ebay and they rust. So I'm not gonna use them. I want to get some in Stainless. I went to the Rosco website but no pricing. Anyone got 1000 stainless jump rings they want to sell?

I have bought willow leaf blades for RR's in chartreuse and in hot pink from Stamina. I bought size 0 & 1's and use them spider rigging on my 1/8th & 1/16th. Work great

Yea, I have been custom painting a few of mine to get some different looks. One color on one side and another color on the other, top one color and the bottom another...the combinations are endless and MIGHTY PURTTY TOO...:D
