nice jig like the colors is there also a clear coat on them
Led
Nice looking jigs I've yet to try extra brush colors since the one time I tried but waiting on a deal hopefully for some non-lead material so haven't been doing much painting.
Fatman
I take it brush tech.mean's" a "Tooth brush" for the spatter effect?:)
Nice job!
Hey Sonny,
Those are awsome. Where are the eyes from ? I assume that is a custom mold !! What year is the dime ? Always lots of questions . How did the gill tournament go ? I am looking at tying vises again and what do you think is the best $100 rotary vise for small (1/16 ) jigs ? Take care !!
DC
I use 2-3 clear coats (Wet-n-Wild or Sally Hansen’s) with the jigs that have the 3D eyes. The top colors have a coat of CC ilusion paint - you can't really see it unless you are holding one - hard to capture the illusion effect with a picture.
FM
Thnx - would those jigs be from Hawnjigs? I've powder painted some of his stuff. The illusion coat on his jigs really shines - outstanding stuff. Have to really watch the temps!!
Grub
I like to use camel hair brushes and the paint along the axis.
Thnx again - Mike.
iF
Thnx - got the eyes from Marriott's - 2mm. The mold is a Do-It chub (cut the barb off). Don't really like doing that because it changes the jig's center of gravity. Thinking on having Collin's cut me one with some changes. Not fun pouring one at a time with a Do-It.
Think the dime is 1940. The pan fish tourney (hosted by fishingnetwork.com) was postponed with no explanation. Shame – the real big Bluegill are starting to bite at Lake Perris now…
I like the Regal vises but any vise that will hold a hook works. Surprised that a lot of beginners don’t look at old Herter’s or Thompson vises – find them on ebay for under $20 bucks. One big plus for the Regal is that you don’t have to adjust the jaws for different size hooks. It does not let go of hooks…. Thompson makes a pretty good 360* vise – fits well in the pocketbook.
Someone want to PM me the brush tech. Is there a post on this? I tried with tiny paintbrushes (not knowing the proper way to do this) and made a big ole melted mess out of them! LOL
I Knew It Was The Do It Chub W/ The Collars Cut Off"!:d

"high School Art Teacher Taught Me To Drag A Tooth Pick Across The Paint Loaded" Toothbrush To Spatter The Paint On To The Edges Of Images,or To Cast Shadows...very Neat Lil Trick":d
Still can achieve this tech.by using powder paint in an eye dropper, and squeezing lil wafts of powder on to the jig while still hot"
TNT
PM cadman - he has a tutorial, that he shares, on his technique (very similar to what I do). He does some awesome stuff and is very knowledgeable on PP and using it. Too funny about the brushes - don't get so close!!!
Grub
While back I read about some Canadians that used atomizers to paint. They use stencils and they do some really awesome work. I've tried bottles before - never tried the eye dropper. Brushes are too easy.
What I do is kind of like Native sandpainting - loading up a brush (instead of a flat stick) and tapping over the jig.
Very nice looking jigs and love the hooks. Those would work for many other species of fish for sure. Love the eyes too. I am still trying to find or make myself a jig turner for clear coating so it is easier to do lots of jigs at the same time over the eyes.
Did you use a base coat and then sprinkle on different colors or is it all done with the paint brush?
OKAY... TAP TAP TAPPEROOO. That is the secret!
Fish Doc's Fly box has egg turners that might suite your needs for that"??? little blue gadget bout 1" 1 1/2 long looks to me like the guts of the top of a bobber ,or float...sorry depending on where at in the U.S. we are speaking of"lol"anyhow"works great for me"
cost is minimal"like $1.65:D sorry you said a lot at the same time"... my bad...
Fine lookin work master Led!
Cool paint jobs, very close to the real thing.I'm gonna give this a try.
Very nice work LedHed. Have you ever tried making your own eyes with hot glue?
F4A
Thnx – VMC hooks were top notch – now the newer VMC are good, still like them.
Have found if you use thin coats of clear coat FP you really don’t have to rotate the jig like you would have to do when you using epoxy. FP dries too quickly.
I don’t like using a base coat with the powder paint because it builds up to thick on the jig – the smaller the jig - less area to cover (work with).
I use the brush to hold light fluffed paint (one brush per color) and reheat the jig between applications. That’s where using a heat gun makes it easier to do the multi colors.
TNT
The real secret is heat control.
Ff46, JJJ, and Pup – thnx again,
Pup – I tried doing the eyes – found out it’s easier to buy them. Did do some with sequins, tiny beads, and glue. I like the 3D and decal eyes with holographic backgrounds. If I could paint eyes like you do – would probably stick with that.
Where did you get your heat gun? Is there a size and model that you would recommend? I've been using bic lighters forever, time to get out of the stone age.
JJJ
The one I use is too much for what I'm using it for. I like the multi temp settings and it is on an adjustable stand. Probably find a good deal on ebay - harbor freight is good also. Mine came out of McMaster Carr (ouch). You must have a big callous on your thumb...
Callouses on thumbs, index fingers.. I have a heat gun that I used to strip paint, but it has only two settings.High setting is 900,which is a little scary.I'll check ebay. Thanks ledhed.
What is a good temp setting for doing jigs.I checked ebay and they have 100's of heat guns.Would a smaller size be better?
mine has two setting high and low the high end being 1100 and the low heat end being around 750, I use the low setting for everything just need to leave the larger jigs under the heat for a longer count other than that it works great. I personally dont think you need to spend big money to have 10 different temp setting unless you have that money burning a hole in your pocket. :D
I like getting them new from the store (wal-mart, K-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, places like that ) for the warranty can always take it back if it doesn't work right or do what you want it to do. Ebay you are kind of screwed that way it might work today and burn out in a week and you are out you money also allot of manufacturer's dont recognize the warranty for they are close out items and are sold for penny's on the dollar to allot of these sellers.
I am a firm believer in that you get what you pay for
Doc
Hey Ledhed, as nice as always. However no fair where are your illusion jigs. You guys haven't seen anything until you've seen Ledhed's illusion jigs. He made a bass pattern for me that was awesome. I would post some pics here, but I don't make any crappie jigs, mostly bass jigs and spinnerbaits. If you guys want to see some of those I will then post some pics.
Very nice looking jigs you have their Leadhead. Started playing with the heat gun this winter, after i saw a post that said how to do it, i dont use the 3 or 4 different colors like you do, mine i just use 2 colors.
What is your plan for the back of the head, hair, feather or plastic ? if you tie any, would like to see them .
JJJ
I set mine ~350*F (hotter than that - they paint starts curing too fast) and hold the jig pretty close to the heat source. If it's hotter - move the jig back.
Don't think the size of the gun really matters as long as it heats up. Smaller ones are probably quieter....
Cman - always like to see your creations, would like to see what you do with some down sized stuff.
Buckeye Mike
Thnx - not sure how these are going to be tied up yet. Did some smaller ones "hard body style" and they are working out the Bullgill and Redear right now. Get ahold of cman's tutorial - will help you get into more colors.
To Ledhed and to all. Several people have asked me to post pics of some of my work, so here it is. These were all done recently, as I take pics of all of my customers jigs I make, so I can reference them later, and it helps me to remember what I did.......Hope you enjoy

Middle Right: 1/4 Vibrating Shad (6) color, wht. base coat, red throat, chart ylw belly, gray lower flanks, silver upper flanks, with black dorsal line faded down.
Bottom Left Corner: 1/4 oz. Ultra Minnow Spinnerbait (6) color, beige base coat, with ylw belly, org throat, lime green lower flanks, green upper flanks, black dorsal line faded down. Both blades painted to match body.
Bottom middle: 1/8 oz. Pony Head, All copper translucent body, black eyes, with copper textured colorado blade.
Bottom Right Corner: 1/4 Vibrating Shad (2) color, black belly with silver black wrinkled finish body.
This gives you some idea of what can be done with only powder paint. The smaller the jig the more difficult it is to apply multi-colors. If anyone has any questions, you are more than welcome to ask.
WOWE cman - awesome
The pony head is a really good looking jig - that blade work is great (on the spinner bottom left also).
Too bad they don't make the Ultra-minnow in ultra-lite size.....
Thnx for sharing.
Thanks LedHed, I am slowly going to migrate over to more airbrush work with powder paint. I'v seen some phenominal results from some guys in town here. But they won't tell me their secret. But you know yourself, there is no secret to anything, just a lot of practice and color matching.
Wow,everything looks fantastic.Especially like the spinnerbait on the bottom left. You are an artist. An ultra minnow in 1/16 or 1/32 would be something.I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Beautiful work LedHed. Looks like fun.
Cman
Don't forget your roots. I guess you can't powder paint cranks - or can you?, hmmmm???
JJJ
Need to wake up Do-It, I would be all over the 1/32. Been thinking about having Collins molds do one.
CS
Thnx - you'll be seeing these real soon.
No doubt a crappie can eat a 1/8 minnowhead with no problem. I've had a 12 incher swallow a #7 shadrap on me and you couldn't see the bait. Probably be a good river jig.Maybe someone's listening and will come up with a smaller size. Do-it could make a 100 run and sell out just from cc members easily.
thoes jigs look awsome and look like fish slayers :)
Great Work LedHed & Cadman
These Guys have inspired me on this powder painting .. but I have a long ways to go ... You should see some of work LedHed has done that Cadman mentioned ... put it in the sun and it is unreal.
The Pix enclosed is a couple of custom Jigs that are a little like the shad or minnow heads that yall were speaking of ... #1 is a size #6, #2 is a size #8, #3 is a size #4 with a tying stem ( I have one a little larger that is a 1/0)
Do not have the exact weights but #1 & #2 or in the 1/32 & 1/64 range the #4 is a little larger than the 1/32.
Wish the paint jobs were as good as those you have all ready seen.
Are these jigs the style you guys had in mind ??
JSC
JSC, nothing wrong with those jigs at all. I look at all the jigs here on this forum, and everyone has certain talents that separates everybody apart. I am very meticulous about my finished jigs and painting, however I cannot tie jigs like you guys do. As funny as that sounds, but I don't have the patience for that. Over the years I have learned to slow down, and take more time, but I too want to get things done quickly. I found out that by rushing things, sometimes it only looks worse. Anyway, in the whole scope of things, the fish really don't care how beautiful the jig is. The pride and craftsmanship comes from the person making the jig. If you ever need any help, you know where to reach me. I'm more than willing to teach anyone how to powder paint. Finally as I always say, it takes a lot of practice.
Hi
Cadman I am a poor tier ... these guys are great ... years ago I tied the Brim Jigs with Squirrel (SP) Tail and sold a pile of them ... got to using Plastic on them and have not gone back to wrapping.
Have a Good One

Ditto - ain't nothing wrong with them jigs - thnx for sharing. I like that style - aren't those jigs from molds you had Paul Ament make? If you ain't tying - show the grandkids how - keep them hooked on fishing.

Couldn't have said this any better;

Hi LedHed ... those jigs were from a custom production mold by P Ament ..
Right now the 2 youngest Grand Kids (9 & 13) have Baseball on their mind except when we get a chance to go fishing ... The older of these 2 has all ready asked about Monday when they will be out of school ... looks like I will have to go out and get in the crowd ... It has been Windy All week .. had everything hitched up to go to day but the wind will blow the hair of of your head. The other 2 are older and they are user not makers (the oldest did "Hang" leader rigs for me till he went off to College) ...
Have A Good Day
