Crappie Fishing / Yo-Yo,s

Guys have there own opinions and I respect that, but this is my opinion about using yo-yo,s to crappie fish. The other day 2 guys were right up in the brush mingling in around the crappie fisherman putting out and running yo-yo,s. Some of the guys had to holler at them to get the crappie off the hook, they were hanging up out of the water.

I was hoping for a warden to show up and hoping for them guys to get around me in my spot with them yo-yo,s---I had a few choice words for them and their fishing tactics.

I think yo-yo,s should be banned for game fishing, plus they take away from the spirit of the sport and to me it is an unfair advantage. I hate flag nets also. These guys know exactly where to place these nets and yo-yo,s and to me it is not fair or good for the sport.

Opinions Please-----Maybe we should take a poll and submit it to the Game & Fish Commission or email them in numbers.

I just have a few questions for you about your complaints. You were complaining about the yo-yo fishermen, but dont they have just as much right to be in that area as you do. And the fish that they caught on these yo-yos were going to be kept for eating, so what is the huge deal if the fish were hanging out of the water for 10-15 minutes. And, even if a warden showed up, it is legal to fish yo-yos, and as long as the fishermen were within visual range or hearing range and the yo-yos were marked correctly, they were legal. I dont fish with yo-yos, but if someone else wants to, I think that they should be able to. As long as they follow the limits, it is no different than somebody catching a limit with a rod and reel.

This topic has been beat to death previously...on other state boards. And the same thing always happens. You will never change someone else's mind because of your experience. It may surprise you, but you do not have to be an unethical, lying, cheating, low-down scoundrel to enjoy running some yo-yos.

I promise you that there are just as many unethical single pole fisherman as yo-yo fisherman. The AGFC will not change the regs because people that enjoy runnin' yo-yos pay their license fees just like all the rest of us.

I would say as long as they fish within the regulations and obey limits leave them be.
Fish are for eating and not just for sport. How about we just go ahead and make it one pole limit, barbless hook and no live bait. Heck lets make several lakes catch and release only.

I understand what you are saying and you are right according to the law. Would you fish in among yo-yo,s or move to another spot or if a couple of guys are fishing and catching crappie, would you move your boat in beside them and start fishing due to it being a public lake and you are entitled to fish their also or would you give them some space and find your own spot to fish.

I say this like this because I saw a younger smart mouth man run an older man off because he wanted his fishing spot and threaten to whip him if he said to much and constantly mouthed off to him, so the older man moved and lost his public space instead of staying where he was.

That smart mouth guy do that to someone else a bit more younger or possessive and he may get into something he can not handle.

I do not watch people that are catching fish and move into their spot to share the spot--I am a lot nicer than that---I respect others privacy and the right to be there, since they were there first.
By the way--it is illegal to allow a fish to hang out of the water using yo-yo,s or drop lines either one.----All parts of the fish must have access to the water at all times.

All nets are illegal for gamefish except catfish in certain waters.

The law says yo-yo's must be within sight or hearing at all times except sunset to sun rise. You may not use but 30. That is all the regs I could find.;)
To the guy who got run off his spot, it is illegal to harass legal hunters or fishers on public lands or waters in Arkansas. If this was true he should call a warden next time.

If I were in that situation, I would just move as well. I don't go crappie fishing to put up with that kinda stuff. I have plenty of days to fish, and there's no need for me to run anyone off a spot either.

If someone moves in on me, and they want it that bad. They can have it...then they can watch me go across the cove and keep catchin' crappie.:) I could really careless if they followed me around all day long...I don't crappie fish to get irritated. And from my few years of fishing, I have found more single-pole fishermen move into my spot than fishermen running yo-yos.

I would never roll up on a bank with others fishing and with the big motor running, proceed to hang yo-yo's. There's a time and a place for everything.

Unethical fishermen come in all shapes and sizes, and they use any and all techniques...that's why I prefer to fish on the coldest, nastiest day in February...'cuz all those unethical folks are sitting at home.;)

Agreed...I completely understand your frustrations on the situation.

I just don't like to see yo-yo's blamed simply because of inconsiderate people using them. It's kinda like the saying..."Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

At least on Millwood, you don't have to worry about jetskis...that's another topic all in itself...'cuz you just can't get away from them!

You may be correct about this, but I have looked on the AGFC website, and have not been able to find this anywhere. Would you please tell me where you have found this. As far as I could find, all yo-yos have to be marked with fishermans info, and must be within sight or sound range during the day, and can be left unattended during the night. And only 30 yo-yos per person, and only 1 yo-yo per limb, float, or stick. I may be missing a few other rules, but this is all I could find.

I have to agree with Chris. The yo-yo's don't bother me. Stupid or rude bother me!

I have been fishing a bank before and get cutoff by some jerk. I'm not talking 75-100 yards down the bank. I speak of about 20 yards or less!:mad::mad:

But I will say this. I will fish through a section of yo-yo's if they are hanging. CAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS CRAPPIE DON'T LIKE MINNOWS!!:D:D

Personally, I love to feel that "bump" we all know as a crappie bite, on the end of my grizzly elite jig pole. HOWEVER, there have been times that I have gone to Old Town Lake, and couldn't buy a bite on my pole. Seeing as how I spent $100 on groceries and gas to get there, and knowing how bad I wanted a mess of fried crappie, I stooped lower than whale turds, and put out yo-yos. I caught me a mess of crappie and went home. When I fried those babies up golden brown, it didn't really matter how I caught them. They didn't taste "unethical." Besides, running yo-yos is fun, and if they ain't bitin on the ol pole, whats it gonna hurt. I see it as another tool to doing what I love to do. This sounds like the old argument of bow hunters. They say rifle hunting is too easy. Heck, I like to hunt, so I do both. Last time I checked, deer don't care if they get shot with a .270 or a muzzy three blade broadhead, dead is dead!! Just like this old horse!

One more thing. Maybe someone should have stood up for the old man in this situation. Anyone that mouths of to an old timer is surely a coward underneath. You could have politely said, "Son, leave the old man alone, or your going to become my new high tech fish-finder when I hold your head underwater!"

I agree with both CEB and Maribou....it is not so much the method or mechanism here that can sometimes be the problem, it is the personality using it. This type of personality is a complete jackass in whatever they do: fishing, driving, movies, etc. Conversly there is a personality type in which I beleive most on this board posess: they show a respect and consideration for their fellow man and the laws that govern us. This carries over into all of their other activities as well.

I for one ocassionally use yoyo's and mainly on Old Town Lake. I respect others around me and I stay within sight and hearing of them. I like to sometimes use them late in the afternoon if the fishing has been slow and maybe pick up a few more fish. Mostly though, I like to put them out and listen to a Hog or Cardinals baseball game and visit with my fishing partner. It really is very relaxing. You should give it a try.

As for fishing around yoyo's ...You bet I will. A yoyo can't fish out a brush top like a jigging pole and I promise you that it can't move around and find a hot spot like I can with a jigging pole. :) I see no need to fish with a yoyo unless the fishing is slow but I sure as heck would not judge someone who is doing it legally and ethically. If I did then what would I say to someone who dislikes the fact that I use a motorized boat, graphite jigging pole, crappie nibbles, or a fish finder because it gives me an advantage.

I agree with crappierookie. Seems like we've alot of trouble with yo-yo fisherman at Millwood. I was at Okay Landing about 4 weeks ago not a soul in sight but crappie hanging from every cypress tree around. This was mid-day and some were dead and most half eaten by turtles. I was the maddest I'd been in a long time, after cutting several live ones loose and seeing all the ones used for turtle bait I called a buddy of mine that works for the AGFC. I give him the name, address, and phone number that was on the yo-yos and ask him to get that info to the wardens. I need to check back with him and see what he found out.

yes I am a yo yo fisherman, like the old saying goes feed a man a fish and he only eats for a day but if you teach him to fish he will always eat but what it doesnt say if you are a new/bad fisherman like me then you need to learn how to yo yo and yes I do stay near them, but as far as them coming out of the water, when you set your hook only 3-5 inches deep that doesnt give you much room plus when they fight it sometimes it just makes it worse and makes them go higher and when going to a new lake sometimes it helps you locate them plus if the fishing is slow it helps out to. I guess it is kinda like gambling I dont support it but it is still legal so if you dont like it then just dont do it but the yo yoers must stay legal!

I ust to Hate yo-yo's, despised them, until a good friend of mine got me out on Lake Conway one night and talked me into trying them. Man we had a blast with them and caught some nice cats and crappie. One night I took one of the neighborhood kids out to run some Yo-Yos and you should have seen that kids face light up when them yo-yos started to pop off and he got to pull them fish into the boat. Another reason I like em is that you can catch some nice cats while your crappie fishing. They are great locators in tree filled lakes like conway where you can then go in and verticle jig with a long pole too. IMO If you are ethical with them, catch only your limit, and stay with in the laws provided, I now see nothing wrong with them except another fun great way to put some crappie and cats (which I love to eat also) in the boat. I don't use em. Probably never will. But, I go along with anything that is legal. Just don't puff up when you ain't around and I doodle my jig or minnow around them. And, if the fish is wasted dangeling from it because you have not been checking it like you are supposed to, it might be on the bottom of the pond when you return.

a real yo-yo fisherman knows how to take a turn or two off the reel to allow the smaller ones to stay in the water when you have to hang 'em higher than ideal.

That is why I did not get involved in the incident between the smart mouth and the older man, plus many more people were around also and someone may have used a cell phone and call the warden, but I did not have a phone. I did not know either one of the guys or if they were kin folks or what. Some of these older men carry pistols anyway and that is a fact. I was not going to leave my boat and wade over to them.

Two heavy set dudes in a red bass boat, and many guys were getting upset also at the crappie left hanging, plus when they run the yo-yo,s you have to move your boat to allow them to get to them.

These I saw were big crappie hanging 6-8 inches out of the water and dead.

I do not dislike yo-yo,s or those that use them. I even owe some myself. When I use my yo-yo,s I am not going to get up in the midst of crappie fisherman to set them out or move you out of the way so I can attend them. I usually get off to myself out of the way anyway. Many people will take your yo-yo,s if you leave them out.

I did not intend to start something with the subject, just wanted an opinion. I guess if you see a dead crappie hanging in a tree, cut him down and let the gar and turtles eat.

Maybe I misunderstood this but are you saying that yo-yo's cost 150 bucks???? I bought 3 dozen last year at WalMart for about 20 bucks a dozen. Maybe I bought the cheap ones......:confused:

They are about 20-25 bucks a dozen at Walmart.

They are nice for catching catfish as long as they do not get too big, but we have some big catfish in Millwood that will tear them Yo-Yo,s to pieces. They will strip the line completely off.

I see.........I thought you were referring to the cost of the yo-yo's.

YoYos ,they are fine its the Bozos that I cant stand. Its the guys settin them, not the yoyos. If they were pole fishin they probably would have showed their butts that way too somehow. Like cut you off or move in on you. It dont bother me, but it sure seems to get to them when im catching them out from under their noses, or boat sometimes. lol Idiots are sadly a dime a dozen.

I don't have a problem with people fishing yo-yo's either. An older gentleman at Old Town accused me of running his yo-yo's one time. I told him sorry, it's not me, but aren't you supposed to be in hearing or seeing distance from them. He had them out all night.

In the spring I always kept minnows and yo-yo's in my boat due to the fact that single pole fishermen will move in on you, so I just put out some yo-yo's to pizz them off. Most times they move on.

Life is way too short to get upset about trivial matters. If a person is fishin' legally and is a taxpaying citizen, the they have the right to fish public waters just like we do.

Now. The water may be high but the lake is still beautiful. Let's get back to fishin'! :)

To each his own, but I don't use yo-yo's and never will. I like to feel that bump when using a pole too much. It can be very irritating when someone comes right in on top of you running yo-yo's like they own the place while running their outboard motor the whole time or leaving their fish to rot. But, I have also had some encounters with unethical and rude pole fisherman. As long as they are doing it legal there is not much you can do, but I keep the AGFC poacher hotline number in my phone and if I see anything illegal, they get a call.
