After reading some threads on here about powder painting,
I realized maybe a pair of needle nose and candle were not the way to go.
Went out and bought a heat gun yesterday and WOW, what a difference!
Especially on the bigger jigs.
Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks!!!!!!!!
You guys are great! Really appreciate the in depth answers to what
probably seems to some really dumb questions. But like they say the
only dumb question is the one that hasn't been asked.

but dont forget you can still over heat the jig had with a heat gun it is all a matter of how much time to keep it over the heat, great way to multi color a jig head also
I use a little burner that burns denatured alcohol. Its very cheap with no fumes, no black soot and no noise. I don't know if its as fast as a heat gun or not. But then I'm in no hurry. LOL

Turn the heat down low.

I just got 1 of these from Netcraft,did a bunch of jigs yesterday.They just need cured.Sure beats the bic lighter i was using.Quote:

As I've posted the photo's of my oven heating method I've never tried the heat gun but am getting more and more interested in it just to cut down the time the ovens on.

FM that was my first thoughs when I started trying these other ways .. I don't think you really cut down all that much on Electric use but it really cuts down on the time to heat & paint .. no "Racking" till I paint and then rack.Quote:

The "In The Oven" way heats the hook as well as the lead ... with a heat gun you concentrate it on the lead a few seconds and thru the fluid bed or sprinkle on with the brush and then to the "rack" ...

I'm a sterno man myself... nice and quiet..... I don't want too much noise coming out of the 'man-cave'!!! The Mrs. might find out where her present-money has been going! hehehheee. But seriously I've seen the gun in action and think it works great. But in a pinch, i'm gonna use the sterno as that's what I'm most comfortable with at the moment.
What brand and power of heat gun are you guys using? Where to get?
If ones able to acquire all that's required "the way i learned was to use my toaster oven for the majority of the jigs being painted to remain at a constant temp.until needed",then to the heat gun" then to the pencil torch should i need to apply a lil more heat as needed when applying several diff colors to one jig when powder painting":)just my $.02

Mine is by Wagner - two heat settings: 750F & 1000-1100F. Stands by itself. Cost me $20-25 at a local hardware store. Rarely use the 1000F setting....

You can also use an embossing heat gun that you can find in most hobby stores runs ~ $10 to $20. I measured the heat - its ~500F. Not as loud as a heat gun.
The Wagner model number JSC is referring to is HT 3500. I know majority of you guys make crappie jigs, so 5 and 6 color application on a 1/16 oz jig is a mute point. You cannot put that many colors on a jig that small maybe 3 colors at the most. But when you get to bigger jigs 1/4 oz and up especially flat side jigs like the Ultra-Minnow, Walleye Head and the Darter jig, you can't beat a heat gun for Multi-color. If anyone can show me a (6) color process done with a candle, lighter, or anything else. I would love to see your work. I'm not trying to be a jerk, it’s that I would like to learn new things just like everyone else. I'm always open to new ideas. If you want to PM me some pics I would be more than willing to swap pics.
I got mine for 9 bucks off ebay. Have had it for a few months. I heat to a count of 4 to 10 depending on the size and then dip it in a small bowl of water. Then I don't burn my figures when I grab it to place it in the curing clamp. Saw that on you tube. Works great!!
