hard question for internet

ok, im tying my own jigs now, having luck, went yesterday and caught 40 crappie, one 12 pound carp, and two spotted bass, and one 10 inch rainbow trout all on my jigs...my question is about tying....when i finish my jigs i am tying a half hitch right behind head of jig where i build it up a little with the color thread im using, i do 3 or 4 half hitches, then i put a drop or two of cement on the thread...however i found that the thread seems to come loose after much use...not completely just a lil, am i cutting it too close or is there a better way to do this final knot

all of those were before lunch...thought ya might wanna know

not sure, but you may not be applying enough tension on the thread when your finishing. Or you could be building it up too much.After securing the chenille (or whatever I'm using for the body), I will make a half-dozen or so wraps with the thread, tie it off (hand whip-finish), then use a liberal amount of cement. I have never had a jig come apart, unless you count losing marabou after catching a bunch of fish.

if you are using the thread to make a neck on the jig cover all the thread with the cement not just the knot.

Can you post a picture of your jig? Might be easier to see what you mean that way. Are you making a thread body, or using chenille?

If your thread is coming undone learn to whip finish, much better than half hitching.

I second the whip finish suggestion. Had never tried it until I bought a whip tool, and now do it by hand and holds better than a hitch. Also, are you using some kind of fly tying thread? If you use just regular sewing thread, they are more likely to come apart... you can put a lot more tension on it with the good stuf!

Whip finish is the best and will not build up like the way you are doing it. Most of the time that I tie thread neck jigs where you see the thread I can cut it so you can't tell where it is finished or at least you have to look close.

Also never have them come apart if done right and I feel that I could probably can get away with not using glue, but I still put that drop.

I dont really use the cement to just hold the thread i use it to help the thread not rot and last longer so one drop wont do that.

this is what i knew would be hard for the internet...what is a hand whip finish and how do you tie it? again i know this is hard to do over the net but just asking....oh and yes im using a chenille body and i am using fly tying thread to build up a little behind the head....help!!!

I think if you go to the main page of the jig forum there is a sticky post that says for new tyers. check that out i belive they have you tube videos linked there that help with the whip finish. also check out the ones that say easy jig or something like that the guy does a hand finish. hope this helps

There is also one called 3 ways to finish it shows the diffent ways to put the finishing touch on the jigs, whip finish is really pretty easy once you do it once or twice even by hand but the tool makes it so much nicer and easier

I tried the tool and ended up chucking it against the wall hands is much easier :)

I think this is the first I would have to disagree with you, since I got the right one it has made my life easier, thread was always getting hung up on the rough spots on my fingers. Now if I played checkers all the time like someone I know my hands would be smooth as a babies behind and I wouldnt have that problem. :D:D

But since using the tool my whip finish has been some much better and it also looks allot better and tighter, I like the tool but it is just as quick using your fingers
