Guess I missed the ruckas but I do have a real crappie fishing question. I caught these crappie crapie on the waterway 8 to 10 feet deep. They were white as could be until the stayed in the livewell about an hour. Then they tured black as ever. So does theis mean they are males that have not been shallow yet and the spawn is still to come?
Did you catch them out of really stained water? That could explain the light coloration. When you put them in the livewell, maybe the water was cleaner than the water they came from. BTW Nice fish!
The water was pretty stained. So if the water is muddy they will not turn black?
I would think if they wer 8-10 feet deep, and they turned black AFTER you had them in the livewell, I would guess your spawn hadn't started yet.
Ive caught some in october that would turn black in the livewell. But sounds like your spawn is fixin to get going pretty soon good job.
You might had some of the ladies in the livewell also. That may have got them in the mood!!!
Crappie might change colors, Black while in the shade and white when they are in open water??

I think they turn black whenever they are stressed, eg. caught, handled, guarding a nest, or putting up with the ol ball and chain (or, even scarier thought, a whole school of them) screaming "earl, I thought I told you to make the bed?!! I've been out getting my fins done, and what do I come home to? You floating around here watchin synchronized swimming on sportscenter!!! Get up and move that piece of gravel and then mow the seaweed!! I swear, I don't know why I put up with you sometimes!!!"
I had some like that last week. These were almost turned from black to white. Couple hours in the live well they turned back black... I got no idea why..
They are male's and your spawn is about to be on.
Fish on the tenn tom do that often. It has something to do with the water color there
Caught a few yesterday in Wolf in about a foot of water that were almost solid black. After about 15 min. on ice, they turned back to almost white. Water is so muddy you can't see your jig 2 inches.
I'm no crappie expert but I think it has more to do with the spawn than water color,at least this time of yr.The male's turn black just like a buck's neck will swell durning the rut,this is the rut for crappie.Most of the time you see really pale fish the water is fairly cool or they just moved from deep water to shallow.
I caught 15 keepers on the Tenn-Tom the other day....they were all as white as they could be...this was last Wednesday....in 2-6ft of water.

Hey guys thanks for all the responses. I think you confirmed my thought that the spawn is about to be on. A little more info. The water temp was only 61 and the grass beds are just now showing a little green.
CH68 I fish the same water as you :eek: and almost every fish I have cleaned in the last 2 weeks have already laid out. I have only had one fish with a full sac of eggs. The rest had pinky finger sized sacs that were bloody and the fish were skinny as a rail. With that being said, I don't think the spawn is bout to happen, I think it already has happened. I was catching them on the banks bout 3 weeks ago and full of eggs. I even caught some yesterday very close to that house in the back ground of your pic that were laid out.:p Is that yours?Quote:

Hey minnerman. That house in the background is my next door neighbor mine is the one with that really long deck. Yep you are correct about the crappie in that area. They are laid out and they seem to be early every year but down the lake I do not think they have. I could be wrong but I am thinking this weekend. You fish in a G-3?
Naw i cant afford one of them nice boats. I fish out of a dirty tan Xpress. Will normally have a couple of kids with me unless I can slip away while they are at school. Ya'll gonna have to do something bout your canal. I'm tired of dredging it out for ya'll. I went in there Monday evening and ran aground and I thought I was running plenty fast to clear the shallow stuff. Aint a good feeling to be running on plane one minute and then suddenly stop. I made it out fine, but said the heck with it and ran wide open. Kinda scarey doin that thouh after running aground.Quote:

That canal is scheduled to be dredged soon. The home owners are paying for it because the Corps say they have no money. The first quote back was 80k. Last time is was done with a big houseboat just running the motor while anchored and blowing it out. I think This time it will be a high hoe on an old barge so watch out. Should be interesting to watch anyway. Hollar up at me if you see me out.
