I've been using the 1/16 collared jig heads I mold myself for tying my crappie jigs. How do the non-collared jig heads work and hold up? I use mostly calf tail hair. Will the hair stay on the jig as good with the non-collared heads? Which ones do most of you guys use for making crappie jigs?
Yes i only use non collared jig heads and they work great. and use head cement at end of tying and you will be fine. when done you can pull on hair and it does'nt move.

I use my jigs Double Duty!!! I take half of each size I make and I cut the collars off even with the bottom of the head. This way I get two styles of jigs out of my molds, now when I have all my parts stocked up then I'll start looking for the collar less model's.
Before I started doing this I just tied right on the collar and cut the barb on it down so it didn't come out the hair or the marabou

tom, It's much easier to tie on the non collared heads. you don't have to use much hair etc. with them. with the collared heads ya gotta use enough hair etc. to cover the collar all around. that can be too much material for my taste anyways. using a tad bit of cement and using some stout thread like 210 denier. and pulling it tight, will keep it all together. no matter what thread ya use, you need to wrap it just shy of breaking it, in order to get some stretch. my opinion anyways. nothing irks me like a jig falling apart.
on the other hand, I do use collared heads for the crappie sized bucktails, and they work great, but the heads are cast from a do-it mold and the collars are slim and tapered. really like that design collar, can even leave the barb on it if ya want, doesn't hurt anything with the bucktails.
I use both but mainly collarless.My pillhead mold is one of my favorites and it has a collar.
I just bought 2 1000ct.bags of 1/16oz. and 1/64oz.bags of collared round heads in bulk on line"because of the convenience."I prefer to use the "non" collared jigs to tie on".
I don't like the distortion of the jig by the time i get to the front w/ my thread.The body materials thicken up causing a belly..."But slowly getting around that w/ Patience though"

I like collared jigs for tying any hair materials, not a barb. For regular chenille & marabou jigs I use no collar.
I use the barb style jig for tying bug like jigs. I snip the barb off and the tying material builds up as it is tyed forwad looking like the body of a bug.
The only thing I want collard is my greens at supper if tying, LOL! If one of the very few time I fish with a collared jig head it will have a soft plastic on, but that is so rare I just about never get into that box. Even solid tube jigs I don't want collard jig heads. Tying I never want one.

Long as you got a little good pepper sauce to go on'im. "o" some hot-water corn bread would be fine with that also.
Wow I am impressed. You know hot water cornbread? That has been in my family for much longer than I. We use to have that all the time and with greens and a little hot sauce (the clear kind) it is great. Take that hot water cornbread and cut it in half and paste it with butter, oh man.Quote:

skip i think only us East Texas boys hold much reverence to hot water cornbread any longer!!

"Somebody" please tell me about hot-water cornbread. I like the good old greasy cornbread fritters fried in a skillet. Of course I had a heart attack last December.
Well it's easy. You get water boiling and mix it with cornmeal until thick so you can make some that are say 3" long and 1" thick and can be round or flat, we always made round and long like the 3" (it will need a bit of salt too). Then you fry it until golden and eat with butter or fake butter. Good with fish as well as things like my family recipe for butter bean soup (now I am not talking about Lima beans either, only speckled will do) or lentil bean soup.Quote:

Prefer jigs with out collars except for bucktails.
Actually like to have some of both. since I only have the one mold I do all my molding then cut collars off and whala!! no collar jigs. Saves me money while I build up the money reserve to buy the molds without collars.
Wish Do-It would make the molds the old way where you had 8 jigs on one side and 8 on the opposite side.
You can find them here and there once in a while.

I only use Non-collard jigs.... easier to work with and makes a whole better looking jig..I tie from 1/100-1/2 oz and they are all Non-collard
