I did multi color PP!!
I did it and didn't make a huge mess out of the jig heads if you can believe it. It may take a little longer but I used a candle to heat them up and it worked great. It was even on lead free jig heads so lead should be easy.

Ugly I know but hey, the fish won't tell the difference. A little practice and I should be able to get a better sprinkle and not so blobby.
For those that have done this a lot, what colors are best as a base coat and which ones work best over what color to really show them off? I tried yellow on orange and it looks bad, bottom left. Orange on chartreuse wasn't too bad, top left. Orange on yellow looks great, all the rest.

Hey F4A ,
Don't the candle soot up the jig head??
They look nice,I like the organe color.

I like those. I keep saying I'm going to do the same thing. But so far I keep putting it off.

No soot yet, I don't actually touch the flame with them just rest them about 1/2 inch above it.
But have to give flatfish the credit, he told me how to do it and encouraged me with his awesome paint jobs. I just hope mine turn out half as nice.
-
Yeah if you don't touch the flame you don't get soot from candles.
Check out my website, I have a bunch of pictures of ones I like.

thats how i do mine also but i use a alcohol burner. I have a pic of them in the multi bucktail thread. Nice job

Well I did another 50+ and did okay on them. Nothing I won't make a jig out of and fish but not exactly what I want either. Gonna have to figure out how to put eye spots on with powder paint once I get sprinkling down. I really want to make stripes and lines and real dots as well as sprinkles so I have a lot to learn.
Oh and if anyone was wondering, lead free jig heads do just fine with a candle. I did a dozen of them and cured them at 275* for 30 minutes. I did deform 5 of the jigs over the candle but I left them way too long and touched the flame so it was my fault.

Fish I saw somewhere and I've been looking for it but there's an eye dotter bottle for powder paint. I'll keep looking for it.

i read somewhere that 2 straws work. you get the sizes you need (stir sticks or whatever) put in powder and then heat jigs and dot your eyes on
-
Thank you fatman, I tried using toothpicks, nails, dowels, paint brush handle ends and nothing would let go of it when I touched the jig without stringing up and they didn't leave a nice eye, not even close.
Do I need to do something to the nail heads or whatever I use to make it work right? Melt some paint to it or something?
How about making stripes and stuff like that?
I might try a straw next time but I don't know where I will find the real small ones. When using a straw how do you make sure you don't get too much one so it doesn't run down the jig head during curing?
-
that i dont know sorry I just read that it worked somewhere never tried yet. I use acrylic paint and hard as nail clear finger nail polish over them works well for me
-
-
I think I have an idea. If I can find metal tubing in the right diameter I can use it to make the eyes and then use a nail for the pupil. I think melting it to the metal is what is gonna work but who knows, maybe the straw thing will work. Lots of things to experiment with.

Eyes
I went to "Stick On" eyes.
Stick them on before you make the final cure/bake in the oven .. some clear coat over them or epoxy over them. I have found that the final bake does a good job ( not the best which is clear epoxy ... thinned down .. over the whole head)
My 2 cents

The stick one go on before you cure the powder paint? And then you have to cover them with epoxy? Is this to keep the eye on?
If the eyes survive a bake in the curing process then why not put a coat of clear pp over them instead of mixing epoxy?

Eyes
I think you misunderstood the last post by me ...
Different ways to do it.
1. I put the stick ons before I cure them.
2. Some put them on Clear Coat & cure.
3. The best looking is cure them then put the stickers on and coat with epoxy ... smooths out and gives it a great looking finish but a lot more work.
Course some paint them on which is fine ... to powder paint on the only way I have heard to be succesful is with a straw .. I have not tried it like a lot of things you may have to develop a skill for it ...
Now another way would be to make a template . .. what ever the material you use .. punch a hole the size you want heat the jig ... sprinkle the powder onto the template hole ... TJs video shows you how to make dots on a spoon which is basicly what you are doing.
Hope that clears up the mud a little.
Let us know how you do.

No worries, just asking more questions. I would have thought the stick ones would have burned of or melted off in the oven. 350 is hot and I figured it would ruin a stick on eye. If it doesn't then it is a definite option for me. I can always try a clear coat on top of them and see if it holds them or seals them in so I don't have to epoxy them.
My only question, or rather reasoning is why try for such a gloss finish? Once they hit the water they get glossier than anything we can coat them with, don't they?

They look good

They look good :)
Now you are getting into peoples head :)
We could go on and on about this .. I think you understand what I mean.
The biggest thing is if you are making them for yourself .. what ever turns you on ... But if you are making them for some one else it is a different story.
Have a good day and let me know how you do.

Yah, I know what you mean. For me to catch fish with them I don't need to do it but to catch fisher people on them the gloss sells them. Will let you know for sure. Gonna try to find some straws and copper pipe today to see if I can get anything going.

More pics of what I did. Getting the hang of it but have a long ways to go before I get specific patterns and looks on them like I really want.
