Hey guys just wondering how many people would be interested in maybe getting a crappie tournament together somewhere in Central Kentucky. These bass boys are always throwing these together but us crappie fisherman are always left out. I don't mine organizing it but just need some input (Lake suggestions,dates). I was thinking maybe Herrington, Cedar Creek, Green river Lake, Kentucky River. I think it would be lots of fun and you would get to meet alot of local crappie fisherman.
... just how much interest will be shown. The idea sounds great, and the details can be debated and finalized right here.
I can see some minor problems, though. We have alot of members that may want to attend, but lake choice and time/date could leave many unable to attend. If we wanted to have a tournament, with a weigh-in & prize pot (be it money, prizes, just bragging rights, or all these), that shouldn't be much of a problem to pull off ... all we'd need was a standard measuring device and a set of scales. But, if we wanted to have a "get together" type of tourney, then we may run into some problems on certain lakes, as not all of the ones mentioned have facilities for that type of gathering.
You might consider throwing Taylorsville Lake into the mix, as well. :p
You might also consider just having the first one or two, to just be "get togethers", or even just multiple member hookups ... rather than an actual tourney ... and see how much interest/participation occurs.
We'd need a set of rules/bylaws, so that everyone participating would be on the same page. This can also be discussed, and tweaked in accordance with the prevailing rules/regs/limits of the chosen lake.
What about it, KY Crappie.com anglers ... :confused: ... speak yur piece, voice your concerns, and let's see what we can come up with.

I like the "get together" idea over the "tournament" idea. Tournments (no matter how small) always turn in to somebody has to be the "big dog". If I am going to a new lake like some that you'll have mentioned. I would like some pointers on what is working to catch a few fish not someone "holding out" so they can win. Just my opinion. I think it would be a great idea for a "get together" and would drive from west Ky to attend! I would do my part on the "feed" also. If the idea gets off the ground, I will look forward to meeting you'll.
Being new to the forum, I would be excited to participate. It's not easy finding folks in the Ville that love to go fishing like it do.
I agree with crappiecrazy. I never thought of fishing as a competitive sport. that takes all the fun out of it and makes it WORK and I fish to get away from WORK. JMO.
We're in! It would be really nice to meet y'all and have a nice time on a lake somewhere. I favor a "get together" type of event over a tournament, also, but we'll come whatever the event is. Saturday or Sunday are obviously our preferred days. We'll come to whichever lake works out best for most people, if I had to rank them for me personally, I'd put 1. Herrington, 2. KY River, 3. Cedar Creek, 4. Green River, 5. Taylorsville. I also like Wood Creek on I-75 at London a lot.
Thanks for getting the ball rolling! Even if we don't get a lot of people to commit, I'd still be happy to meet a few people from this site.

I'd come down from western PA to fish with you guys. Looking to fish more lakes in KY than just Ky lake. Wood creek on I-75 sounds good. Maybe only 6 hours away from me.:D

Ranking them, on a scale of possibly even catching a Crappie from them, I'd put Wood Creek last in line :p
The only ones of these lakes, that I've even managed to catch a Crappie over 3/4lb out of ... is Herrington & Green River Lake. (caught 2lbr's from them, in the distant past).

It depends on the lake but it would be better to do it early before all the ripping and running starts.
Pap, that was a rough guess by me. Would take even longer cause i'm bringing my boat and i dont travel fast with it. Hey Dave, i'll fish some of those hair jigs i got from you.
Sounds like we got some interest. Most people seem to want to have more of a get together than a tournament. That sounds fine with me. If we have plenty of people to actually meet and get together we may talk then or at a later time of actually getting a tournament together. I really don't care where we have it, as long as it's not several hours away. I fish Herrington Lake ( put in a Bryants camp), Cedar Creek ( put in at main ramp), Green River Lake ( usually Holmes bend), Kentucky River (put in at the end of 39, between locks 8 and 9). Never fished Taylorsville, Cumberland (for crappie), Barren, or Dale Hollow, but i'm up to try,any of these especially if we can get some locals who know the area and could help us duds out that's never been there. Let's start making some suggestions on dates and times. At that point everyone can say yay or nay and we can come up with a definite date and time. Being on the fire dept I usually fish during the week because theres so much traffic on the weekends. But I get weekends off too and realize that alot of people dont have the luxury to have many week days off. Lets just start making some suggestions on Place, Date and Time. Communication will be the key, so lets respond to the suggestions. At this point we can just meet, fish, share information and catch a lot of fish.
I like the Green River Lake area. Never fished it but from the maps I have seen looks like an interesting lake with many features (creek drops, timber, stumps etc). 2 hr drive for me. I think Schoolteacher is a guide on the lake and may give us some tips. Not everyone is going to have 3 days to find the fish. That is usally about long it takes me to come up many much action on a new lake.

Now, all we need to do is pick a lake. Then pick a date.
Here's all I know, of concern, about the lakes mentioned :
Wood Creek: small/narrow lake, clear water, Crappie are small and few, no size limit, creel limit is 30, only has one ramp (fee - unknown)
Herrington: inconsistant lake levels, stained water, launch ramp fees, good numbers of Crappie, sizes run from dinks to slabs, can be hard to pattern, no size limit, creel limit is 30
Taylorsville: prone to flooding from moderate rains, stained water, free launch ramps, Crappie numbers fair to good, size limit is 9", creel limit is 15
Green River lake: large lake, clear to stained water, free launch ramps, Crappie numbers & size are good, size limit is 9", creel limit is 30
Cedar Creek Lake: very small lake, clear to lightly stained water, doesn't flood but can get murky/muddy from heavy rains, free launch ramps, Crappie numbers are good to excellent, size is mostly on the very small side (7-9"), no size limit, creel limit is 30 (only has Black Crappie)
Now, those are just my take on these lakes ... so correct me if I'm wrong on any account. I'm just expressing my overview of these lakes, for the benefit of those that may not have fished them or only fished them sparingly, in order for them to be able to choose the more appropriate place/time.
My experiences tell me that mid April to mid May is the peak time for these lakes, given the weather conditions/rainfall/water levels & condition.
Once the lake is chosen ... which ramp acces we meet at will have to be chosen, and the start time. I suggest we make the start time about 1hr prior to heading out on the lake, in order to give everyone a chance to meet/greet, shoot the breeze, and allow stragglers & newbies to the lake to arrive at the designated area :p
I'll put a poll post sticky on here, and we can vote on our first get together destination.

I'm all for the idea as well, of the choices available, Green River Lake would be my perferred choice. But I'd be with whatever the majority votes.
Count me in,Green or Taylorsville sounds good to me.
Man crappiepappy you really know your stuff, the description of the lakes are almost dead on from what i know. My vote would be for Green River Lake as well. They have nice big marinas there to meet at. The time frame Crappiepappy sounds good as well. Sometime betweeen mid april and mid may.
CP, I initially voted for Herrington, but I can be on Green River just as quick. I'd just like to meet y'all.
I'm in. I assume we would do a 2 person per boat deal. I have never fished a tourney but I think this would be more like a get together than a tourney. Your seat is still open the the "Crappie Cruiser" C.P. :O)

Yes, it's going to be a "get together" ... meet/greet affair, not a tourney (yet). As such, there will not be any limit to number of anglers per boat, other than what's legal poundage/persons for it. :p
We're just doing this to get to know each other, put names to faces, hookup some members, and such.
I'll keep you and the Crappie Cruiser in mind, for sure ;)

I'm glad someone finally started things on a get together. I voted for Taylorsville but it looks like the majority prefers Green and that's fine with me too. Looking forward to meeting everyone.
(On a side note, I was locked out from posting for several days and I didn't enjoy it much. I didn't realize how much I "needed" this place. Thanks CP for sending Slab the PM to reset my account).
