I hope to pour a few hundred 1/16, and 1/8 and may also do a few 1/4 with some 2/0 sickle hooks to give them a try. I have been thinking a bigger hook sure would be better. The smaller ones for me is way to small.
Anyone else doing this?

just remember that the gap on a sickle hook is about equal to the next size up, on a regular aberdeen jig hook. looks that way to my eye anyway.
I bought some for a guy that were 1/16 & 1/8 Sickle hooks, but don't really think he's crappie fishing. He does fish for crappie, but I am not sure what these were for. I do know he was going to cast them and had me time them really different.
Oh and they are pill head. Also I have some 1/4 with either #2 or #1 Sickles that I got for bass and they seem huge to me.
Don't think I want to go that direction for crappie for several reasons. First is they get pretty heavy and don't think they will bend near as easy as the #4 say. I do get them back a lot when using 10# Power Pro. Next I just don't think they need to be that big unless you buy some of the 3" solid tubes and then the extra shaft length will help. More people use a big hook than you probably think.
So depends on what I am doing fishing wise, but most I will stick to a #4.

I like the bigger hooks, tends to catch them in the roof of the mouth instead of the paper thin part. Don't expect to catch any bream (though I don't want to catch bream when I'm after crappie).
I hope to give them a try on Sardis in the next few weeks. I know I had just a few 1/0 last year and 1 2/0 that I had poured for White bass with me on sardis. They did better then our normal size jigs and hooks.
So going to give them a good try this year. I found out bigger is better most days for me on crappie.

This one caught by my friend's gal as I recall with a 5" Kalin grub on a 1/16 3/0 Sickle round head. They target smallmouth and get these as by-catch.

I think the sickle just looks bigger because of the shape. The ones I use match standard hook size charts. I pour some 1/8 with the 1/0 red sickle that get used a good bit on Sardis. Here's one that caught about 125 Sardis crappie last year.

Just the right loop makes for more action from the jig! cant emphasize this knot enough"!finally:rolleyes:good job JCnMS.:o PINKS A LIL WEEK THOUGH:o
JCnMs, your line looks heavier than average, what #test? Like Skip, I've been liking #4 hooks but you guys are making me think I should upsize. Maybe a bigger hook will keep the dinks off?
Whatdaya call that knot??

The pink is light because it had already caught 125 Sardis crappie.
That's a piece of 17lb Stren XT. No, I don't crappie fish with it. That's just how I keep up with that particular jig. I do use 4lb size/15lb test braid with a flouro leader while jig fishing.
I don't use a loop knot while fishihg. I usually use a qiuck snap, medium size. Quick change and a bit of rattle created by the metal to metal contact.
Regarding hook size. I cast a #2 in my 1/16 oz jigs and 1/0 in the 1/8. I got tired of bending the smaller jig hooks to a bigger size. Fish have no problem with the bigger hook.
