New Ties (comments and critiques appreciated)

Alright yall, here are some new ties. Please tell me what ya think.

1. Some bluegill/redear jigs. They are supposed to be imitative of freshwater crustaceans in general, but the sowbug/scud fly patterns are what I had in mind. I guess they could look like a caterpillar too, but whatever they look like, I think they'll catch some fish. Olive and natural hare's ear dubbing, shellback, and copper wire tied on 1/64th oz. jig heads.

Interesting bend on that hook for the shrimp. Is that your idea or did you pick that up somewhere? It makes sense to me though...as the curve would be upright ...representing a live shrimp, rather than a dead one...belly up. I could especially use that design for some ice fishing baits. Good job me thinks. I will like to know if you do any good with 'em.

Well I like it and those colors should work to but do they?

Those are "Unique Treasures" and should get a fish to bite on them.

On the top ones the hook bend looks to be backwards to what fly guys tie on for a skud. Did you bend them your self? It will be interesting to know after you try them if they hold the fish well.

I like the tie on them though and look pretty good. As I said the only thing that caught my eye was the hook bend and I just don't know about that.

They all look good, but I really like the ones in that first picture. I'm not a fly fisherman, so that thing was new to me. That ought to do well for crackers or gills. That bend in the hook was interesting too.

i think they should work .the first one is like a scud in reverse

I thought it up all on my own, although I can't say whether or not it has already been done. Yeah, if you think about how a jig naturally rides in the water, then that crustacean pattern will ride hook point up, with that reverse-bend giving the jig the life-like curl, "legs" on bottom and "back" on top.

lynn: I just made them last night. But for the bluegill jigs, I would think any self-respecting bluegill would eat something as buggy lookin' as those. :D

skip: yeah I just bent the hook shank in three places: the front third was bent by holding the hook shank with needlenose at the new bend spot, then pushing the lead downwards, then pushing down on the other side of that bend, then bending the rest of the hook near the shank downwards. Not sure if that makes sense...I'll post pics

I think the scud tie is terrific, but the hook angle looks like a bend out after a fish got away.

The first jig is very interesting looking, but methinks you gonna lose a lotta fish on that one!!

I just don't think that that will happen, at least to any great extent. The mouths of gills are quite fleshy, and there is still plenty of hook and barb left. A good hookset and tension on the line are important. But we'll see. It'll be months before I go after gills anyway...

I like them except for the bend. A good tight line is one thing but a jumping fish could throw them quickly. I wish there was a jig mold that took a Mustad 37160 hook. That would eliminate the worry of losing fish and also take care of the hook bend problem. I have tied many shrimp/scuds on M37160 and they work great. Might have to see if I can weight the shank just right to get them to ride curve down.

Either that or find someone to make a mold that will take the 37160.

The top ones are the nearest thing i've seen to a freshwater shrimp. i'd like to try tying one how's it done???--shu
