Lake Purdy is part of the Birmingham Water Works. It is approximately 1,000 acres. Rental boats and motors available. No private boats. Lots of bank fishing. If you don't have a boat, it's probably as good a place to go as any. The channel is fairly easy to find on electronics. Most fish caught in the channel.
I live within 10 minutes of Purdy and have just begun to crappie fish there.
As far as renting a boat - I highly suggest that you bring a pad for the seats but you can rent a 10 hp engine, trolling motor, depth finders, paddles and about anything else you can think of.
I've heard crappie fishing is excellent and I'm hoping the weather breaks to warm up soon. The water temps about 52 degrees right now (2.21.09)
ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR PURDY, IT WOULD MEAN ALOT.
Oak Mountain is also a good place to fish.but not trolling motorss but you can get a new one for $100.00.It can get expensive renting every thing from Lake Purdy.
I know - I can really get a trolling motor for about $100? WOW! I'm all in on that. That's great.
I have some buddies who have their own 10 hp OB motor but I'm not "there" yet. They fish the friday nioght bass tourney and know the lake well.
I'm bank fishing at the moment, anyone have any tips of what to look for from the bank? I caught a few on a tiny minnor crankbait but they've been few and far between.
i fish lake purdy alot...went this evening for a couple hours...fished the grants mill bridge area...one keeper...no real bites.
i just try and go alot, starting in mid-january or so.
once the water warms fish will be in the creeks by grants mill bridge,
and on both sides of the 119 bridge.
i fish minnows and jigs...just depends..
you will see alot of folks fishing the easy access blowdowns...or easily accessible spots on the banks.
take the walks...find places no body seems to fish..it's worth it
although i often catch fish in high traffic areas, by going very light..4lb, and using attractants
couple weeks ago...got on top of bass, caught two handsfull, lost a another handfull..cause of light line.

Really? Hell, we've seen each other than vic.
I have been trying to locate the crappie but seems the bridge is always busy. I may get out there early sunday and see what I can do. I have done the walks by parking at both bridges and a backpack but was bass fishing. I saw Roland Martin catching slabs on TV in No. Fla by using something called fishermans' choice dried worms.
i'm gonna ask in a thread about them.
probably so man...i drove by today, coming back from shelby county...water is stained, and was choppy. saw one guy with a couple "barely legal" (if legal at all) fish.
guy at the marina said the water was in low 50's yesterday...i think these fish are still in the main lake. he said he has a website up, the name is on the sign at the marina gate.
i couldn't get to it.
gonna go tomorrow during the day, and looking for clearing or water that is getting some sun...don't know....i just go two or three times a week this time of year...cause the bite is going to come. i have caught most of my best fish...on a evening bite...i love daylight savings time :)
good luck let me know how it goes

i think so...still haven't caught or heard of any heavy fish. my unk and i went out yesterday evening from around 4-7:30.
caught 10 keepers, nothing heavy a couple 12 inch fish. still no steady bite...they are in and out...in and out. but consistently getting bit 3-5 ft deep, and catching little males right on the bank...so they are doing what they are supposed to...i just have to e in the right place at the right time.
"thats why they call it fishin',not catchin'"
vic
yup....in the creek just before you cross...on the left, headed towards 119.
my uncle was tickled, he caught two keepers on his first two casts. i told him to shut-up before everybody was over there with him. minnows 3-5 ft.
I got some keepers on white jig, and minnows.
still big fish to be had before the 1st spawn run...anyday i'm thinking?
see ya

Very cool. I was on the bank with a backpack on throwing light weight tackle. We need a secret wave.
If I see someone I think may be you or vice versa, I'll just take my hat and wave it - over my head. And I'll need all the secrets on how, what where to catch them.
Well I don't know if it helps or not but we were in a boat on Wednesday and got there at 2:30 and by 6 we had 48 keepers in the boat. We probably threw back 15 but they are definitely starting to bite.
Good to hear. ANy and all Lake Purdy advice on what lures would be greatly appreciated.
I'm in the process of getting a OB motor as well so I can go after them from somewhere other than the bank.
I am so sorry to revive this very old thread, but no one is posting on my thread recently about Purdy Lake. Now, if you go to their website, they have pics of people with nice crappies caught by the Solar Bees? About 2 miles out from their boat launch. I am planning on going in a few weeks and rent a boat at try to find this bridge/creek you guys are talking about. If I am leaving the boat launch headed out, which direction to I take to get to this spot? the creek just before you cross...on the left, headed towards 119?
I've never been here, but live 30 minutes from here. Anyone want to team up and fish together? We can maybe split the bill?
