Trying to get into jig tying

Hey all. I've been hearing all the wonderful tales about jig tying on this forum and I've got a friend who's getting into a lot of fly tying for trout, and I think I'm ready to make the jump. I've read several threads about where to look for the tools and such, and plan to try that eventually, but thought I'd check here first and see if any member on here has any tools they've outgrown or upgraded from who's willing to help out a newbie to the jig tying profession. I'll probably repost this in the Oklahoma forum just in case anybody there doesn't check this forum regularly, and hope for some bites...hehe...made a funny there didn't I. Anyway, if anybody out there has some older tools out there that they want to get rid of, please send me a PM, or just reply here. Looking forward to hearing from you all. Thanks again.

its more of a passion for us to create and build jigs. normally the tools you dont out grow you just collect more. it wont be cheap i can tell you this much but the best way is to just start slow and let it roll on its own because it will get costly once you start enjoying it . as it does with anything we do these days.

That's the truth. It is expensive. You might find someone willing to part with some stuff, but you're prolly just gonna have to make the investment. I have a less expensive vise called a Danvise. My girlfriend got it for me just before we broke up :D (I got out while the gettin was good if you know what I mean). Anyway, a Danvise will run you about $85 and your startup materials will prolly run you about the same depending how fancy you want to get. It's all worth it though. You can tie pretty much anything you can imagine.

Allright, I get the hint. LOL. I'll start shopping around and see what I can get. Might just use my buddys stuff for now. Build up some spending money and then go for it with my own stuff. My Step mom has all the fly tying stuff I had bought my dad years ago before he passed away and she's supposed to get it back to me at some point, but I have absolutely NO idea when if ever that I'll get them. So I'll just start checking around and see what I can find. Thanks guys. I appreciate all the tips.

I can tell you one thing for sure, if you start tying jig and then add flies you will spend a lot more. Everyone wants to say it doesn't take all that much to start. Well that is true, but then that is just the start. I have all the materials I need and more, but I keep buying it.

Get some jig heads,borrow some materials and maybe an extra vise from your buddy and see if you like it first. If you don't you aren't out any money.If you do like it then it will start costing you,because tying is an addiction.The more you tie the more you want.

I really don't have a tying addiction I DON'T My problem is simple ?I'm constantly in quest of the color that will always produce THAT'S what I tell My wife so far it's worked because We all know as avid fisher Men 1 color will never be the perfect color ! so I started an alternant plan if She become's wise ,Now I must design the ultimate bait that will alway's produce ,but you will need different color's I turely believe I'm working on a new redfish bait that will corner the market. I don't eat redfish much to long and skinny if they were shaped like a perch I'd go more. I was settin out on the water the other day and had the Strike-King lure Guy come buy He was goin to test run some new stuff it was cool that morning Man he was running 90mph had matching colored helmet and all on He vapor locked Me in his prop-wash and He was 200 yds out good thing them 10 power stiener Bi-nocs I keep an eye on Him !

hey slab does your wife like shoes if she does it will not cost that much but helps when she says to stop buying mats
you just say but rember your shoes and how you couldntwear that pair on that day or with who knows i norm stop lisening about then
well see i need this color <incert the mat> for this day and i know i cant use it on this other day but just like your shoes i have to have it
if your wife is like mine she will give up after 10 min just becouse she knows you came back with the same crap she does every week she brings home more shoe

oh and gl with it once your start most of the time your not fishing you will be looking a a vice
